An excellent assortment of methods for dealing with pain
Maggie Phillips has gathered an excellent assortment of methods for dealing with pain. These include breathing exercises; sorting out feelings about pain; relaxation; imagery; mindfulness; bioenergy approaches; movement; pendulating (alternating between constriction and expansion); love; and building on success. Each section has discussions, case examples, helpful exercises, notes and references.Phillips' approach is very straightforward and practical, acknowledging that no single method is suitable for every person or every pain. This is an excellent book both for those needing help with pain relief and for therapists who want to learn diverse methods for dealing with pain.

Just reading this book will relieve some pain because of the author's compassion and positive outlook on managing and possibly even reversing chronic pain. My husband suffers from chronic back pain and I am buying him a copy because the book has been very helpful to me.

rip off?
This has the exact same exercises as Les Fermis's famous book about dissolving or reversing pain, including the very same exercises. Was she a student of his? Why would a publisher permit this? Did she have Fermi's permission? I found this bizarre and would really hope she sees this and answers.

Self help for pain
This book is a great guide to finding ways to reduce personal perception of pain. The author makes no claims to cure the underlying problem but offers many options to help one manage pain. Each chapter has several options and each person can choose what combination of activites works for them. Highly recommended.

An Excellent Resource to Reverse Chronic Pain
In this excellent book on reversing chronic pain, Dr, Maggie Phillips, who has over 25 years experience in helping people overcome chronic pain, presents a combination of techniques that will help those with any type of chronic pain create a plan to reverse the pain cycle. She points out that not all techniques will work for everyone, but by trying different techniques people will find those that work for them, and by combining these techniques, and doing them regularly, they will reach a tipping-point where the pain begins to subside. Those of us who have, or like me who once had, chronic pain, tend to cut ourselves off from our body, which disconnects us from the mind-body connection and engagement with our innate pain relievers. Dr Phillip's techniques are centered on finding and using your body's natural resources that can regulate its responses to pain. Pain is not only in the body, but is also governed by the brain. Pain signals are sent up the spinal cord to the brain, which then interprets them as a threat, which generates anxirty and pain, or as not a threat which then generates more neutral sensations. En route to the brain the pain sensations pass though 'gates' in the spinal cord. Certain experiences open the gates so that pain sensations pass through to the brain Other experiences close the gates and stop the pain signals from reaching the brain. This book teaches you many ways to control the pain gates so you can reduce the amount of pain that passes through.Dr Phillips says that of all the people who have worked wih the program on which the book is based, ninety-five percent have improved, fifty percent have dramatically reduced their pain levels and their reliance on prescription pain medication, and about fifteen percent have discontinued pain medication while their pain rmains at significantly lower and livable levels.
