The Standard Horizon HX891BTBK is one of the best handheld VHF radios I’ve used — it packs a lot of power and flexibility into a rugged, marine-ready form factor. The 6 W output and selectable 6/2/1 W transmission let me reach others reliably even in rough conditions, and the built-in 66-channel WAAS GPS ensures accurate location and position reporting. I especially appreciate the Bluetooth-enabled hands-free operation (great with a headset), and the submersible, floating IPX8-rated housing gives peace of mind — even if the radio goes overboard, it stays afloat and keeps working. The user interface is intuitive, with a large dot-matrix display that’s easy to read day or night, and features like DSC distress calling, NOAA weather alert, waypoint navigation, and group-monitoring add significant safety and convenience for boating excursions. If there’s a minor downside, it’s that like all handheld VHFs, range is limited compared to fixed-mount radios with large antennas — but for a portable radio, HX891BTBK delivers an outstanding balance of portability, durability, and performance.

Outstanding radio. User controls are very intuitive. Compact size controls are easy to manipulate with neoprene gloves. This is a replacement for my Ajax h70 radio purchased only because it had more features. The standard horizons radios in my opinion are best in class. I recommend this radio for anyone who spends any time at all on the water. It has literally been a lifesaver for me.

⁰Got this for the dinghy. Great features & functions. I wanted a radio that had AIS, & GPS that could be used if the fog rolled in or it was a moonless night. It's awesome.

This radio is awesome both on transmit and receive. Weather radio is great. GPS. All good. Note that you may need to apply for a radio operator’s license depending on how and on which body of you use. I use mine internationally.

Why did you pick this product vs others?: Unit works well but very short range with rubber antenna Also i wish it had a recharge outlet besides having to use the base as the only way to charge

Item failed after less than 6 months of use. Manufacturer's warranty / repair process is obscure and slow. Entirely unsatisfactory. Don't buy this brand.
