UPDATE, 3/09/17:I have now had and used this product long enough to update my prior review and I want to do so even though my prior review was "excellent." First, I confirm that the product is, indeed "excellent." Next I note that some features which I either had not thought were included, or which I thought I'd have to become accustomed to using, either are actually there or took a very minimal time to get used to. The gate works smoothly and can be shut without effort. We use it numerous times a day and it has not even needed to be adjusted, even though we let it kind of slam shut.We will be moving shortly and it is likely that we will need one or more additional gates. I will absolutely purchase the same one(s)! In fact, if were sure as to what I'll need, especially the sizes, I'd make the purchase now just in case they become unavailable for whatever reason. The following remarks are what I wrote when I published my review the first time: Over the almost 50 years of married life, I feel as if I've purchased every type and make of gates, to use for children, grandchildren and pets. None of them have proven practical and useful and/or have held up for what I consider a reasonable length of time, and many were far more costly Most of them had "weak"spots which broke. I installed this one 4 days ago. It seems quite durable. At least I don't see any potential "weak" spots. For me, the only downside is the latch operation. It appears to close tightly, which, of course, is a very positive feature. I like the options offered. You can set it up to swing open either or both ways, and there's a latch at the bottom that controls your opening and latching options, and serves as an additional locking feature. However I find it very difficult to unlock/open one handed as two things have to be pressed simultaneously. This is especially problematic if you are carrying anything, which we virtually always are, as only one hand is free. I am practicing using one hand and, hopefully, will later be able to do so more easily. I have another gate which only has one latch to press and the gate swings closed. However that has its pros and cons: easier to open and lock but the lock is not as secure and, if I am carrying something, I have to rush to get through before it swings closed. The double latching requirements make this one much harder for little ones to operate, but for now also harder for me. I'm not concerned about our little Yorkie, smart as she is, learning how to unlock it! So I highly recommend it if little ones are around and l suspect I will do the same, with more practice, if purchased just for pets. I don't know how well it would withstand a big Lab, etc., but I suspect it would, and only time and use will tell for sure if its durability surpasses my experiences with other gates.

I purchased 3 for my home.1. The tension gates are made of metal and quite sturdy. My toddler pushed on it repeatedly with his entire body weight and it wouldn't move (however, it is still critical to always ensure that every child at watched while at the gate).2. Installation was easy and fast as the first gate took me 1 hour, the second one took me 30 minutes while the third one was done in 15 minutes. Additionally, no drilling and no special tools were required.3. 2 extensions came with the gate and are handy for different sized locations.4. The gate doors can open up in either direction which is quite helpful.5. A toddler cannot open this gate as it has 2 buttons (one push-button and another press button) that require movement simultaneously with the use of mild strength. This usually requires fine motor skills and the strength of a much older child or adult.Things to remember:The item is correctly setup with tension if and only if the locking mechanism slot is green in color when the gate is open.Recommendation:I personally recommend getting a baby gate wall protector cup (separate purchase and comes in a pack of 4) to prevent wall damage and offer additional grip. A simple search of "Baby Gate wall protector cup" will provide the necessary search results. Most wall protector cups fit this gate size.Biggest concern:The reason why I only gave this item 3/5 stars is because the threaded metal spindle rod and connection to the wall keeps breaking off. This has happened on all 3 of my gates, though the gates still remain intact. This can compromise the integrity of the gate as the tension can loosen over time. Additionally, I could not find spare parts on Amazon or the company page. So, even though I generally love this gate, I can only give it 3/5 stars until this potential design flaw is addressed.Customer service:Reaching customer service by email about the previously listed concern was a bit challenging and time-consuming.
