How are the neutral wires handled? Do not see them shown on any of the diagrams.

You don't use neautral wire in a 220/240 circuit . Two hot leads and the ground is all you need .

Can I use a external switch to control this mag starter

It comes with a switch on the side of the housing, but im sure you could run your own switch.

I have a big air compressor with a 5hp motor, it doesn’t have capacitors on motor, will this start/run it?

If your motor is Three phase then it won't work, this starter is for single phase 220-240 volts

What are the power requirements needed to pull in the coil?

I would have to be 110v or 220v unless there's a built in transformer, which I doubt.
