With an all-star cast, Born Equal is a critically acclaimed film from Bafta-winning writer and director Dominic Savage, exploring aspects of poverty, race, inequality and also class in modern Britain by following the stories of several people whose lives become intertwined. Mark (Colin Firth) is a wealthy city worker whose conscience and guilt about his luxurious lifestyle prompt him to try to help those less fortunate. Michelle (Anne-Marie Duff) is a pregnant mother with a young child, who has escaped an abusive husband. Yemi (David Oyelowo), his wife Itshe (Nikki Amuka-Bird) and their young daughter, who have fled the threat of violence in their native Nigeria and Robert (Robert Carlyle), newly released from prison and embarking on a search for his mother and to try and rebuild his life. Their paths lead them to climatic events that will change their lives forever. This is a thought provoking film that is reflective of modern day Britain.

Not perfect, but a sincere attempt to show the effects ...
Not perfect, but a sincere attempt to show the effects of economic inequality in our societies. Almost cinema-vérité in atmosphere; at times I felt as if I was watching a documentary. One could ask for a bit more exploration of the characters, a bit more depth in the relationships. Still, a good film if not a total success.

In a blink it is over but it will make you think.
This is a profoundly moving film and although one is ashamed to call it entertainment it is a must see film because although it was made over ten years ago the issues are here and still we have not learnt. I never saw this when it was first shown but having seen it now in March 2018 it has to be seen by as many as possible. One reviewer said it was not perfect-what is it that people want? I thought it incredibly realistic, very well acted and extremely sad. Sad because although some do something to help others do not. We should try harder and all the characters have their demons and although the film offers no so solutions and hope and dreams seem so far away it is the inner turmoil they suffer that we ultimately suffer. An excellent film, well written, well directed and well acted from everyone who participated -thank you for opening they eyes of those who might want to blink but cannot.

Brilliant
My daughter appeared in the film as a child and I had been searching for a copy to purchase. All her school friend, family and prospective husband love every bit of the film

The acting and camera work are excellent and the subject matter is hugely important
Amazon star rating definitions seem inappropriate; for me it was not a film to "love," "like" etc. The acting and camera work are excellent and the subject matter is hugely important. While a twee, happy-ever-after ending would have been disingenuous, I thought the conclusion reflected only those parts of reality where mental illness, abuse and violence end in hopelessness rather than including those (admittedly fewer) times when some people escape tragedy.

Never, in a million of years, did I think this would ever get released!
I remember seeing this film on BBC ONE back in December 2006 and thought how gripping it was. I also thought to myself "Will this ever get released? Probably not." Well I thought wrong! I just can't believe it's FINALLY coming out on DVD after all these years and just can't wait to FINALLY get it on DVD! Fans of Colin Firth, Anne Marie-Duff, David Oyelowo and Robert Carlyle will not be disappointed with this excellent drama!

Worth tracking down and seeing
This was a television movie on BBC I believe. I saw it on television during a layover at Heathrow Airport. It is a thoughtful movie, raising issues for which there are no easy answers. Mr. Firth is, as usual, a fine actor who helps you understand his character on more than a superficial basis. I'm sure the movie raises issues that are important both in Britain and also in the United States. The rich get richer and the poor get lost. And sometimes terrible things happen because of that.
