Mavis (Liza Minelli) is a dance teacher who lives with her embittered and insecure boyfriend Patrick. Asked to prepare her class for a charity show, she finds her would-be dancers woefully in need of rehearsal and a bit preoccupied with their own problems - but as their technique improves, so too does their self-respect.

Minnelli, Walters and Winters what could go wrong.
A good story don't think it was featured or promoted enough, no tragic deaths just a story of a struggling dance teacher and pub singer and her pupils. All have stories the piano player played by the late Shelly Winters possibly her last feature film, a proud lady working for spending money. The bullied and abused Andi and the quiet man Geoffrey who comes to her rescue , the young married girl whose husband works away but she still flirts . Julie Walter's in what I think is an excellent performance as the wife of a banker Lionel who mainly ignores her taking more interest in her daughter to take to dinners , ballet ect . She spends money on some fabulous outfits much to the shock of the other training dancers. The group is entered in to a charity competition with something to prove to the snobbish big dance studio owner. A funny sometimes weepy movie a must for any Minnelli fan but the star for me is Julie Walter's or as she is now known Dame Julie Walter .

A rarity by Minnelli worth catching
Presumably this film was not given a DVD earlier because it made almost nothing at the box office. It's a strange beast, being a British play made into an American movie, with a luminous star, Minelli, to attract the fans. However she had had several turkeys since Cabaret and the trend persisted. The playwright, Richard Harris, also wrote the screenplay and he cannot help it that some characters are under developed, parts of the film being a succession of short exchanges in an attempt to give all of the (excellent) actors something to do.The plot is an attempt by a fading chorus girl to turn a flock of geese into swans, the climax being their big dance number at a charity gala. This is brilliantly done, since it's fun to watch whilst stressing their mediocrity. Of course when they return next year they are more professional and it's clear that actors such as Bill Irwin, Julie Walters and Ellen Greene are indeed good dancers. Interestingly the song for this final number, Stepping Out was written by Kander and Ebb, who wrote Cabaret and a number of songs specifically for Minnelli. Has it ever been sung elsewhere? Four stars just, since despite its faults, this film has bags of sincerity and lovely acting. Yes it's corny but tasty as well.

... for the unofficial copy from crystal media and was glad I did
I gave up waiting for the official copy as they have not released it so I went for the unofficial copy from crystal media and was glad I did, its a good copy and the sound was fine so for 10 pounds its worth the money. Why done these companies give us more films that we want ,they just make us wait and they are the ones losing out on the money they could make. Liza Minnelli is great in this so is Julie Waters what more could you ask

Liza is at her very best since Cabaret
Fabulous a disparate group of characters make up of an ensemble of hilarious clown who go on a rights of passage and hit the big stage with a big tap dance routine. There’s truth in each performance led by the protagonist Liza Minnelli fun vulnerable and capable of find pathos. A cathartic film to laugh and perhaps aspire one day to do exactly what this show was all about

This film V new stage version - no contest!
Still lots of fun with great cameo role by Shelley Winters. Wanted to watch this again ever since I discovered that Amanda Holden was heading a new production of said musical at the Vaudeville Theatre in London, which I will give a miss. Who can effectively reprise Liza Minelli or Julie Walters' roles!! If you do decide to attend the Amanda Holden version PLEASE ensure you watch this film to see how it should be done.

Stepping out - the tap dancing movie
I'd almost forgotten about this film. I can't remember what reminded me but I'm glad I was reminded. What a sweet film. So entertaining and with a lovely ending. Very cheering. Happy to have bought it.

Why am I alone tonight, when I should be Stepping Out
Such a great hidden gem of a movie from the early nineties. Great to see Liza and also Julie Walters in a feel good comedy. Well worth a watch, especially on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
