Bill Oddie’s Gripping Yarns: Tales of Birds and BirdingBill Oddie is at times brilliant , entertaining and sometimes downright irritating. Love him or hate him you cannot deny his knowledge of birding. This book is constructed from a series of some 60 articles which he which wrote for Birdwatch magazine , expanded , re edited etc and published ca 2000.These are tales of chasing various birds – some rarities , many common but elusive birds who only appear in specific habitats and an insight into the obsessive nature of the rare bird hunters – the twitchers. Be prepare to be gripped ( in the non birding sense).(I classify myself as a “ bad birder” whose main interests have been identifying, photographing and videoing , the antics of birds in my Somerset garden – backing onto the foot of the Mendips – I am no twitcher but will check out birds wherever I happen to be in the world and attempt identification).Do check out other Bill Oddie books – particularly his “ Little Black book” - if still in print or as a good S/H copy.So who will like this book?Committed Oddie lovers / readers of Birdwatch ; Twitchers who like tales of others who have dipped out ( missed goodies – not THE Goodies) ; general birdwatchers who wonder what it is all about ( you will need a decent bird identity book for some of the birds mentioned.Personal rating ( it not be any other way) 5 star for information and amusement.

Love Bill Oddie but thought the book disappointing

We bought this for our son who was mildly interested in bird watching, after reading it he became extremely interested and is now an avid birder himself. He said it was a delightful read and a must for anyone remotely interested in birds and birdwatching.

A collection of light and funny birding tales, mainly centred around the UK.Easy to read, and entertaing - if you dip in and out. Trying to read everything in one go, is a little repetitive!Nevertheless wothwhile for birders!
