Excellent,well-designed feeder.
So far, so good. The previous seed feeder I had - I think I bought it in-store, in a supermarket - did last quite a long time, but eventually the flip-top broke at the 'hinge', and subsequently kept blowing off in the wind. This one is sturdier (and slightly larger) altogether, and the design of the top is such that it's easy to fill, but fastens securely and won't easily break.I trust RSPB products, having opted for one of their feeder tables and been impressed by how well designed it is. The dull green colour of this feeder is ideal for attracting birds. As others have mentioned, birds don't like/are alarmed by bright colours, especially red, and except possibly for magpies, tend to avoid shiny metal. It always takes them a while to accept new things, especially if very different from what they are used to; novel mean 'potentially dangerous' to birds, who will cautiously wait and see whether anything bad happens to the more adventurous among them, before trying a thing themselves. This feeder is fairly similar to their old one, which I replaced yesterday. Today I have seen tits and sparrows using the new one, so that's a thumbs up.Some reviewers have complained that with various feeders, seeds fall out onto the ground. I don't see how this can be avoided, unless the openings are so tight or so designed that they actually block up, which surely would make the feeder pointless. As it is, 'my' small birds scatter seed when using the feeder, and pigeons, starlings and blackbirds, as well as small birds including dunncks and robins, eat up what falls on the ground. I don't much mind that; I suppose I do sometimes resent the mount of money I spend feeding feral domestic pigeons who've gone over to 'the dark side', haha, but hey they all have their little lives to live and I don't think it's right for humans who feed birds, to be 'species-ist' about who they like, or don't want, in their gardens or yards.Anyway, to get to the point: there are cheaper feeders about, but this is a good one, worth the price imo, and I recommend it.

Seed-catcher tray
I originally thought that this seed tray was a good size but after having it for a while, it's apparent that a lot of seed still gets thrown over the sides by messy eaters. I'm disappointed that there isn't a larger size tray by RSPB. I purchased this tray to prevent seeds falling to the ground as rats live on nearby wasteland. However, the seed tray is sturdy, easy to clean and was very easy to fix to my RSPB birdfeeder. There is a slight collection of water after heavy rain but I just wipe off the excess water. Better a bit of water than small seeds escaping through the water holes. There wouldn't be much point to a seed-catcher tray if the rain holes were large enough to let seeds through.A couple of resident doves perch on the tray to eat the seed but they are such beautiful, gentle birds that I certainly don't begrudge them food. They are not messy eaters like the starlings who toss the food over the edge of the tray. Two cute mice sometimes sit on the tray but again, they are gentle, sweet looking beings and I don't have a problem with them having a morsel of food.

The top slides up so it's a bit more sturdy and grand for the price
Like a number of other bird feeders I've purchased over time, nothing draws them in like this cheap, old plastic thing so I thought I'd be something similar this time. It took them forever to take to it, but they've eventually started coming in. It's nice that the top doesn't slide off, though it slides up enough and the bars pivot so you can fill it easily. Yes, it's plastic and not fancy looking, but the birds don't care. I'm just glad they're coming in. I think it works very well.

Don't take it apart, doesn't go back together!
I like the design, birds very happy with it (feeding suet pellets from it) and I bought the large tray for the bottom, which also works well. However, I took it apart for cleaning for the first time today and the screws that keep the green bottom of the tube on won't go back in, or at least won't tighten. The hole for the screws isn't threaded, so not surprising that it doesn't work. Ended up securing it with parcel tape over the loose screws for now - very annoying.
