Q: How to turn the light off once its turned on?

impossible to turn the light off easily ( you need to break or cover with something the plastic stick) , anyway the light disappears after 8-10 hours

Q: Are these rendered useless if they freeze and then thaw? I'm thinking if I leave them in my car through winter they will be ruined if they freeze.

I have used these exact same once when I was in Afghanistan on the fobs to make light of the objects on the small squad base that were hard to see at night. I was there through the winter and I ended up taking a box home with me. After six months or so of drastic climate changes, the chemlights were still effective. If you crack them and use them through the majority of their life, sticking them in the freezer for a few hours drastically increased their life capacity for illumination. I only speak from personal experience, so your experience may vary. Regardless, it's a great product to have in emergencies or just cracking them at random bars and giving them out to strangers! It's a conversation starter.

Q: Do these float? I'm looking to use them as emergency markers for inland marine expeditions.

Yes. Caveat: They float vertically, straight up and down. Only a small portion, perhaps 1" will float above the water. So, the glowing fluid will be at the bottom of the light stick and the air pocket will be above water. You could, say, put it in a balloon or something... Cyalume may make a solution for what you're looking for. Contact them direct.
