Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G: Compact Versatile Lens with Vignetting Concerns
4/5The Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G is a fantastic compact walk-around lens that offers versatility and excellent performance, making it a great choice for various photographic tasks. With its fast f/2.8 aperture, customizable features, weather-sealed design, and compact build, this lens is well-suited for travel and a range of photography genres. Its macro capability and suitability for landscape, street, and portrait photography make it a valuable addition to any photographer's kit. However, a notable flaw of the Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G is its tendency to produce significant vignetting at 24mm when two filters are used, unlike the Sony 20mm G f1.8 lens. This flaw could impact the overall image quality, especially in scenarios where multiple filters are necessary. Despite this concern, the lens remains a high-performing option for photographers looking for a versatile and compact lens for their mirrorless camera setup.

Sony 24-50 f2.8 Weighs Only One Pound
Light weight is terrific for travel and the quality is excellent. Use it with my Sony a7r iv.

There's a reason why few lenses cover 50 to 70mm -- there's little need for those ranges
I can't say enough good things about this lens. I'm a street and travel photographer, so having lightweight gear is very important to me. I've taken the Sony 24-70 f2.8 Mk II on several big trips now, and I love the versatility and imagine quality of that lens. I do not, however, love carrying it 8 hours a day for 20 to 30 days in a row. When this lens was announced, I was very excited at first but then scared off by all of the Youtube reviews that were lukewarm about it. Everyone seems underwhelmed by the zoom range, but that doesn't bother me and I wonder if it would really bother most. I've done a review of the focal ranges I've used on long trips, and the ranges for my "keeper" shots are not what I would've expected. I shoot very little between 50 and 70 mm, and I assume many are the same because there are so few prime lenses that cover that range. That's why I picked up this beauty of a lens. I pair this with a 85mm f1.8 tiny prime, and those two light lenses cover me for tons of circumstances. And the combo of those two lenses is so easy to carry all day long. This lens size feels perfect on my A7r4. It also has all the extra features I like in the premiere Sony lenses, namely the included aperture ring and the focus hold button. This is officially a G lens -- not the highest price point G Master lens -- but I don't see any difference in build quality. Much like the amazing 20mm prime G lens, I think this feels just as good as my 24-70 GM. As for image quality, I won't comment on the vignetting and distortion in the corners because I correct both of those with one button click in Photoshop. I realize that the amount of correction that needs to be applied slightly reduces the image quality in the corners, but I'm okay with that trade off. Imagine quality in the center is mostly even with the 24-70 GM, with the possible exception being at the 24mm length. I don't shoot that many landscapes; I imagine that if you shoot landscapes and you need absolute sharpness corner to corner, you won't like this lens. However, if you need that type of image quality, you probably using fixed primes. But if you do any shooting outside of a studio, this compact lens should be something you consider. I'm thrilled Sony is making lenses like this and the new 20-70mm f4 to give photographers some options. This is an absolute perfect lens for travel, for street or general family snapshots. Overall, I'm thrilled with this lens.

bad distortion in the corners
I tried 2 copies of this lens, and the softness and distortion in the corners is very bad---the worst I've seen of the 10 or 12 Sony lenses I own. I'm surprised Sony produced a lens with this obvious flaw, uncorrectable with lens compensation in camera or in Lightroom/Camera Raw. I'm also surprised so many people find this acceptable, but it's a trade off for size/convenience. I'd rather carry a slower, larger lens with good quality edge-to-edge sharpness than get home with images with significant distortion.

Beautiful Soft Image and Massive Distortion
This lens gives you a beautiful soft image which proves that it’s a G lens. This is best used for portraits and pictures of objects/landscapes. This could also be a good video lens given its G quality IQ and light weight especially for gimbal users. The reason I returned was because -1. The IQ doesn’t allow me to crop like other Sony lenses do. It’s a little soft for cropping.2. The focal range always seemed limiting to me and I desired to go beyond 50 all the time. I already have a 35mm prime and this lens doesn’t do any justice with the limited focal range. I might go out with a 35 or 24 mm prime instead of this.3. The distortion at 24mm is massive. People who don’t shoot raw or only shoot video may never notice but something to keep in mind.Overall, if you need a light lens for travel or your only lens for the day or if you are a video shooter, this could be a good lens. For photographers- there are third party options to consider given the price which is lot more for what you get where third party manufacturers are offering good value lenses. Also it’s hard to justify this over a 24 or 35mm prime.

versatile - can be adjusted manually and automatically
This is a very compact and versatile lens. It is a little under four inches and weighs a little under a pound so not too heavy. The lens can be focused both manually and automatically which I really like. You can manually control iris and zoom as well. I have a passion for nature photography as a hobby and this works well for that. It takes good close ups and wide shots. The lens comes with a lens hood to help with rogue sunlight. I'm not a professional photographer, but I have been very satisfied with the lens.

Compact G
Love the size and G build lens with all the modern design details, aperture ring, function button etc. It’s a mini G master without the 70 reach on the long end but use your APSC mode to punch in. 2.8 throughout is great. I like to shoot mostly on the 50mm and 35mm end so the inverted zoom (the lens extends to get 24mn) is not an issue. Very happy with this lens that almost never leaves my A7iv.
