Gorgeous bijoux tin with vintage branding but an odd colour selection
This set is part of Schmincke's "retro" collection of limited edition sets featuring historical colour palettes. From the packaging: "The 'Retro Line' is a revival of historical HORADAM watercolours that were once used for beautiful watercolour paintings." Its primary attractions are:1. the pocket-sized bijoux (jewel-box) enamelled palette tin with the Art Nouveau wordmark the company used between 1881 and c.1911 printed on the leading edge; and2. the historical selection of colours.Other sets in the Retro Line include a 12-half pan set in a long (24 half pan capacity) tin, and a "Sketchbox Set" with 6 x 5ml tubes in a square tin.My recommendation: unless you are particularly keen on the bijoux tin with its vintage Schmincke branding (and are planning to expand it by filling the central section with four additional colours), one of these other sets might make a better choice. Yes, even the one with fewer colours. Because the main criticism I have of this 8-half pan set is the odd colour selection.Even allowing for the "retro"/historical constraints, this set is let down by two things: the absence of a cool red (which means the closest you can get to a purple is a very dull plum shade), and the decision to include both Yellow Raw Ochre (PY42/PY43) and the especially yellow-hued Raw Umber (Y43). Pigment siblings like this can be interesting and useful but seem out of place in a limited palette set of just 8 colours.By comparison, the 6-tube set includes the newly re-issued historical "Cochineal Red" (albeit a fugitive colour, accompanied by warnings to take photos of any paintings!), and the 12-half pan tin is able to accommodate a much more balanced selection, with double primaries (adding a warm yellow, cool red and cool blue), and additional green and more useful range of earth colours, while still following the "retro" approach. My photo shows initial swatches of the pure colours and some mixing scales for most of the colour pairings (except Schmincke Payne's Grey). Even though you can get a decent range of greens from very bright, yellowy greens to muted olive shades, and some good oranges as well as warm earth tones and reddish browns, the absence of clear violets/purples is noticeable, especially for painters accustomed to having a modern quinacridone rose (PV19) in their palette. There's also not much in the way of clear, deep brown tones.I would recommend adding in a cool red from Schmincke's range (there are various options depending on how "vintage" you want to be and whether you want a red or a violet pigment); a darker earth colour like Burnt Umber or Green Umber (both PBr7), Mahogany Brown (PBr33) or perhaps Vandyke Brown (PY150, PBr7, PBk7); another, warmer green like Chromium Oxide Green (PG17); and a traditional cool blue like Prussian Blue (PB27).On the subject of expanding: these bijoux tins can vary a bit in their internal fit-out. The one I received assigned a bit too much space to the row on the hinge side, at the expense of the width of the central row. So Schmincke half pans wouldn't fit in the middle, but some slightly smaller, more tapered half pans did. By comparison, another similar bijoux tin that I own has evenly spaced rows and can take Schmincke half pans in all three. Your mileage may vary, but if planning to add extra pans of colour, be prepared to seek out smaller empty pans (there are various generic options, and Winsor & Newton pans are the smallest of the lot) and pour your own from tubes. Definitely don't buy the extra colours as pre-made Schmincke half pans without testing the spacing first.I haven't commented on paint quality. As might be obvious, I'm a longstanding user of Schmincke Horadam watercolours – I like them a lot and recommend them highly. And I figure this set is likely to be of most interest to connoisseurs and existing fans anyway. If you are considering this as a starter set, I'd point you to the 12-half pan set in the larger tin as the better option.

I love this set
Absolutely lovely set of paints. The color selection is super versatile and there are quite a few unusual pigments used in this set like PG18 (Viridian) and PR83:1 (Alizarin Crimson). All of the paints are vibrant and rewet nicely. Unfortunately the set includes a few colors with low lightfastness which means they will fade rather quickly when exposed to sunlight. This is not a huge issue for me personally because I work a lot in Sketchbooks so the colors are protected but some people prefer more permanent colors.. The vintage looking tin is gorgeous. It’s a standart Schmincke tin with vintage printing and it looks stunning. Overall a super nice that I personally absolutely love.
