great scripts (Roy Thomas) fabulous art (George Perez) Buy It
Some terrific stories by Roy Thomas and some gorgeous art from George Perez who was really finding his feet at this (early) stage in his career. Not all the art is by Perez but there is some very competent fill in work by John Buscima and Ron Wilson. My favourite series of stories are Roy Thomas' last in the book. Starting with issue,176, with the Impossible Man in the Baxter building (and more cameos of Marvel writers and artist of the time than you could possibly need) the script is tight, sharp and humorous, with some great art from Perez and sets up the next seven episodes of great characterisation, complex plotting, drama, tragedy and triumph. Add in guest stars Thundra and Tigra and a new version of the Frightful Four and you've got a more or less perfect story. Perez doesn't provide all the art though. Ron Wilson and Sal Bucema draw two episodes each. Wilson in particular, (whose work I don't usually like) shows what a fine artist he can be when he pulls out all the stops. Len Wein scripts the last half dozen issues with Perez back on art; another run of great stories culminating in........... ah but that would be telling!Overall a great run of stories where once again the F.F. live up to their title "the world's greatest comic magazine"
