Product Description A cable channel VH1 compilation featuring some current names in rock who came together to pay tribute to the psychedelic rockers The Doors. Artists include Ian Astbury from The Cult performing 'Whiskey Boy', Perry Farrell from Jane's Addiction performing 'L.A. Woman', plus original Doors members Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore. From .co.uk The premise of The Doors--Storytellers is straightforward enough: wheel the surviving three members of The Doors out in front of a studio audience of the devoted, engage a cast of guest singers to stand in for the late Jim Morrison, and allow messrs Manzarek, Krieger and Densmore time to recount a few anecdotes about the good old days and take a few questions from the punters. The result is an hour of television that will bore all but the most hopelessly obsessed Doors fan into a state similar to the one Jim Morrison has been in since 1971. It's not just the lacklustre performances, or preposterous guest stars (Perry Farrel capering through "LA Woman" like he's got a scorpion in one sandal, Ian Astbury helping the band illustrate their influences with a woefully misconceived stab at Bertolt Brecht), or the fact that anyone with the slightest interest in rock'n'roll has heard these stories about Morrison a million times already. What really grates is the air of reverent solemnity; Manzarek suggesting that Morrison's continuing internment in Paris' Pere Lachaise cemetery is "appropriate" because of the company of Wilde, Moliere, Piaf and Chopin is a moment of rich pathos unrivalled by anything in This Is Spinal Tap. --Andrew Mueller P.when('A').execute(function(A) { A.on('a:expander:toggle_description:toggle:collapse', function(data) { window.scroll(0, data.expander.$expander[0].offsetTop-100); }); }); From the Back Cover On this exclusive VH1 Storytellers compilation, some of rock's biggest names come together to pay tribute to The Doors - the band that would forever change music in the 1960s. Jim Morrison's poetic and controversial lyrics combined with the band's dark, hypnotic sound continue to influence artists and fans from all walks of music. This VHS is a mere sampling of The Doors' monumental impact on the rock world. Amazing!!!
Although Morrison is obviously irreplaceable, Ian Astbury (The Cult), Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots) and Travis Meeks (Days of the New) give fantastic performances of Doors tracks, with the other vocalists fading into insignificance. Each of the singers brings a different aspect of Jim's vocal style to their rendition, and even seem to assume his character while singing! They really give it their all!For purists who think that the three remaining Doors should leave well-enough alone, I can only remind them that the Doors music is their musical heritage as well as ours, and that after 30-odd years, the band should be allowed to enjoy the songs they wrote with Jim, while sharing the love they had for him with us.
