Incredible book demonstrating the lifelong work of Bettina. Cheaper price here than Taschen online store, definitely recommend to have on your coffee table. Now i see where Mert and Marcus get their inspiration from ;)

I tend not to like Taschen books--can't quite put my finger on why this is so--but maybe their quality is getting better. In any case, this is a gorgeous book, so very well done. I liked all the "extra" behind-the-scenes type images, as I felt everything added, and that there is so much to enjoy, so much visual excitement, so much to explore. If I had to "complain about something"--it would be that the size and weight of the book make it somewhat of a challenge to casually glance through, but I realize this is a plus to most people, plus the pictures do look really nice at this size.

This is a wonderful overview of the work of a great portrait photographer. What I love best about her work is that whether the piece be fashion-oriented, a traditional portrait, or something more erotically charged, she elicits an almost fierce cooperation and complicity from her sitters. It always seems to me that her sitters create the images as much as Rheims does.

Great, amazing book! It's really a shame that the book came to me in a "used" look, even if it was new... The corners of the hard cover were all smashed and there were even scratches in the cover... Poor, bad storaging...

When women love a book like this there is something to rave for right ? ;-)

This is a retrospective of 35 years of Rheims' work from the late 70s onwards. It includes portraits of pop and rock stars (e.g. Madonna and Marilyn Manson), supermodels (e.g. Iman and Naomi Campbell) and her work for well known fashion houses as well as her own artistic work (which frequently tend towards the erotic).The book is heavy- about 2.5 kilos- and printed on good quality paper and the images are well reproduced. There are a couple of fold-out pages so that images can be reproduced across three pages. Pretty much what you would expect from Taschen.As this is a retrospective, the pictures are taken from several of Rheims' previous publications- I don't think there is anything new here. The book is divided into sections named after those previous works and there is some accompanying text- but only a few sentences (in three languages- English, French, German)- It is the photography that is on show here. Anyone looking for information about motivation, technique or biographical information would need to look elsewhere.The main problem with the book is that there is no table of contents and no index. This might not be a problem for many people but I would have appreciated a table indicating where each section starts and an index of subjects and so on. I would also have liked to have just a little bit more information in each section. Five stars for the photography, four stars because the information is lacking.

Es macht hier keinen Sinn über die Fotografie von Frau Rheims zu sprechen. Wer sich für dieses Buch interessiert kennt Sie und man kann zu Ihrer Fotografie so oder auch ganz anders stehen. Sie hat Ihren eigenen Stil gefunden überwiegend ungeschminkte Schönheiten mit unbeteiligtem Gesichtsausdruck in leicht heruntergerissener Pose und Kleidung/Umgebung abzulichten. Ob man das mag muß jeder für sich selbst entscheiden.Deshalb gehe ich zum Buch Design über. Es ist groß, die Bildqualität geht in Ordnung (glanz), auch wenn es nicht gerade ein Edeldruck ist, bei dem Preis nicht machbar. Es umfaßt im Wesentlichen das gesamte Schaffen von Frau Rheims über die 40 Jahre. Gegliedert ohne Inhaltsverzeichnis. Dann aber kommen die Buchtitel Ihrer Veröffentlichnungen als Kapitelangabe ganzseitig. Meist auch mit dem entsprechenden Cover Foto und etwa 5-8 weiteren Fotos aus dem jeweiligen Band. Anschließend etwas Text 4-7 Sätze in englisch, französisch und deutsch. Unter den teilweise ganzseitigen Fotos stehen zur Erklärung, Name des Models, Ort , Jahreszahl und ggfs. eine Schlagzeile.Das letzte Kapitel auf mattem, rauhen Papier ein Abriss Ihres Werkes mit Kontaktfotos, Zeitungsanzeigen usw. Auch hier keine besonderen Erklärungen.Das Buch hinterläßt bei all seinem Umfang, Gewicht und Fülle von Fotos trotzdem einen etwas gespaltenene Eindruck. Zumindest ein Inhaltsverzeichnis hätte das umfangreiche Werk etwas gegliedert. Man könnte dann nach speziellen (buch)Titeln oder Zeiten nachschlagen. So kommt doch etwas Kraut und Rüben Feeling rüber. Die Präsentation in einem hochwertigen Band ist doch von der Haptik her sehr viel angenehmer. Leider sind die Einzelbücher teilweise unerschwinglich.Fazit:ein opullentes Werk , mit fehlender sauberer Gliederung , mein Empfinden ein Nachschlagewerk Feeling ohne Inhaltsverzeichnis und weniger eine Foto PräsentationKann jeder für sich entscheiden ob er damit zufrieden ist

Arrived damaged. Bought as a gift so not enough time to return. Disappointed

Für das schmale Geld 600 Seiten Bettina Rheims gebunden und in guter Druckquallität, kann man hier bedenkenlos zuschlagen. Der gleiche Band hat vor nicht all zu langer Zeit als "Early Adopter" Edition um die 500 Euro gekostet.
