There's a trigger on the hook that releases a catch, allowing the spool to wind up the cord from the middle to both ends. It just takes a little tension on the trigger to release the catch. It's a very convenient way to quickly spool the cord and partially encase it. It's not for heavy power cords or thick A/V cables, but for most lightweight headphones or USB power cords it may be the solution you're seeking.

Good but not for long cords
Work well and keep cords tidy, but I made the mistake of buying these thinking that they would work for a 7 foot cord. They were designed to fit regular sized cords.

This is a very nice keeper. We used it to travel; very robust and takes minimal room. It extends and retracts very easily. Since there are no loose cords, it travels nicely as it does not tangle with anything. Price was also right! I recommend it!

Worked occasionally
It does not work properly only occasionally. Need to try several times to make it rewind properly.

amazing, plasticy for the price
I spend a lot of time in airports and was constantly winding and unwinding my cables. It is a great tool that does not add bulk or much weight to my backpack. Highly recommend!
