Since Lonely Planet was acquired by Red Ventures, the new editions of their formerly trusted travel guides are now beyond useless. No information on attraction hours of operation , prices, or addresses. Instead of sections for attractions, hotels, restaurants, etc., all of the content for a city is just mashed together in one disorganised set of paragraphs that doesn’t tell you why you should visit any of these places.I have used LP’s guides for all of my travels over the past 10 years. This book will be the last one I ever purchase.

O quel che resta della Lonely Planet. Questo volume è l'edizione più recente, uscita a maggio 2024 in inglese (entro giugno dovrebbe uscire la traduzione italiana) e sostituisce le precedenti edizioni. Questo accorpa tutta la Francia, mentre in passato i volumi erano due (nord e sud). La differenza più evidente è la riduzione di pagine:1300 quelle complessive dei due volumi, poco più di 800 per questa edizione 2024 (con in più un'impaginazione ariosa che migliora la lettura, ma sacrifica spazio al testo). E se già la copertura dei luoghi peccava di molte lacune in passato, in questa edizione è un massacro. Tale da rendere inutile l'uso di una guida per chi vorrebbe pianificare un viaggio che includa luoghi "minori" lungo l'itinerario. Se per minori dobbiamo considerare città patrimonio Unesco come Poitiers, Albi e Saint-Etienne. E non che le descrizioni o le informazioni dei luoghi trattati siano esaustive: ci si fa un'idea, spesso imprecisa o quantomeno parziale, e niente più. Una guida dunque adatta al turista che proviene da molto lontano e che ha bisogno di uno strumento agile che gli faccia credere di ricevere indicazioni per vedere il meglio di una nazione. Le alternative, per quello che ho potuto vedere (ma forse mi posso sbagliare) non ce ne sono. Esistono edizioni Lonely Planet di singole aree o regioni francesi, ma le ho viste solo là e non so se esistano traduzioni. Ero però nel frattempo già passato alle Routard: ci vuole, come è ovvio, almeno un po' di francese scolastico, ma la quantità di informazioni utili è impareggiabile. Poi ci si può divertire a criticare lo sciovinismo francese e bla bla, ma in mano hai comunque uno strumento denso e spigliato che fa il suo mestiere. Ogni volume inoltre costa relativamente poco.

Excellent series of guide books. Weve just bought the latest edition.Always accurate and helpful. Far superior to the glossy ones with less detailed content.

I've been using Lonely Planet guides for international travel for over two decades but this recent edition made it clear that I need to find a more helpful guidebook for future travels. I had used the previous France edition for initial planning but waited until a month before my trip for this issue to come out. The prior edition was much better in organization and overall information, and would have been a better choice even with some outdated information. Lonely Planet seemed to have revamped their format and taken out so much of what made it helpful in the past. This guide was poorly organized, lacking basic info such as metro stop, hours, of operation and other details that are nice to have in one place. The index was scanty. The book seemed to mainly provide some limited information about sights and and expect you to get online to track down all sorts of other details. I had another guide from a different publisher for a region in France we visited that was incredibly helpful and easy to use and reminded me of the Lonely Planet of old. Don't waste money or time on ths guide.
