The Well of Ascension
J**L
One of my most favorite fantasy series
❝I write these words in steel, for anything not set in metal cannot be trusted.❞After the whirlwind of events that took place in the first book, Well of Ascension might seem extremely slow paced at the beginning. I recall reading some Goodreads reviews saying exactly that, that the course Sanderson set the book on, didn't live upto the hype that the first book created around it. I disagree with that. What's left of Kelsier's crew spends a certain amount of time and a big part of the book discussing politics and philosophy. And it seems only reasonable. Because if Sanderson hadn't focus upon the fledgling nation which was on the brink of collapse and its amateur, fumbling leaders, it would have been too unnatural and not on par with rest of the story. Think about it like a giant stepping stone towards the finale, like delayed gratification wrapped up in Sanderson's clever words.Well of Ascension is a wonderful assortment of numerous plots, subplots and hidden agendas. In his books, Sanderson has elevated men and women to godhood and brought gods crashing down with equal fanfare. It's more nuanced than The Final Empire and peppered with unexpected twists and turns. Elend's characterization came across as a pleasant surprise. In fact, I could connect with all the characters to a greater degree because Sanderson didn't shy away from the fact that even Heroes can make the gravest of errors, that they too are humans. Well of Ascension surpassed my every expectation.

Solid 2nd entry
Lord Ruler has fallen , Skaa are free , the empire has begun and yet the shadow of the survivor looms upon all , over powering everyone . And we all miss him dearlyWHAT I LIKED :The weIn remembering how good the first book was , it was an uphill task to deliver another good outing ,however Mr Brandon Sanderson is a master storyteller for a reason . He delivers a book in Well of ascension that is a worthy successor to the first book while adding a lot of political intrique , some absolutely mind bonkers , awe inspiring, jaw dropping action sequences and a lot more focus on the characters .Especially touching in this character narrative were the friendship formed between Breeze and Clubs , the relationship of Tindwyl and Sazed and Oreseur and Vin .Vin's growth as a character throughout the book is well done , it never feels like a female character written by a Male author , it feels right and one of the chapters where Vin shares her thoughts with Elend is really heart wrenching (in a good way) . And well the final 2 parts of the book were simply awesome and delivered a climax that really shades all the fallacies this book hadWHAT I DIDN'T LIKE :The biggest issue i had with the book was the lack of the Survivor . In my opinion the survivor carried the first book , in the first book the world was bleak , but Survivor's charm made me as a reader ignore the weakness. The multitude of references involving all the characters missing him doesnt help but is a constant reminder as to what we are missing .Meanwhile, the political gimmicks sometimes dragged the book , and i absolutely felt the length of the book , whereas the first book. Felt a lot shorter than it actually was . It was not until the final 2 sections of the book that i got immersed into binge read mode .There was also a lack of credibility in the love triangle , for me the introduction of the triangle felt forced and Vin came across as a gullible idiot , the final twist also was significantly less impactful and pretty predictable. Finally , while my indifference to Elend turned into genuine likeness , Tindwyl as a character was grating and i hated much of her chapters , it was only when she got paired with Sazed that she generated any positive emotions from me .CONCLUSION:A solid entry into the series , which on its own is probably a very good book , a better book than i give it credit for , however as stated earlier the shadow of the Survivor looms over this book and the inevitable comparison with the first book makes the reading experience here a little less enjoyable and hence it shows on my ratings

Addictive
Absoulte marvellous piece of literature. Some may criticise it for its exaggeration over some points like the subconscious paranoid nature of Vin but believe me there are few things perfect and also it is not that annoying. With so much going around the story little reminders help you to recall things. And yeah few more critiques i heard were like he describes a lot of visual actions eg Character smiledHe frownedHe went pale but how do u expect it to be good without these just lmk lol

Slow start, but still amazing.
4.5 StarsSometimes (more like a twice a month) I have a really hard reviewing a novel. I can't figure out what to say.I mean, the first book in this series was... amazing. I was fascinated by the world and I loved the characters. The story was engaging and the ending kinda destroyed me. I legit sobbed when Kell died. Hell, for the first couple hundred pages of this book, I was tearing up every time he was mentioned. It was hard but I eventually got over it to focus on the current events.Which were not happy. In the novel, it's been a year since Vin killed the Lord Ruler and Luthadel is in a precarious position, meaning it has an army outside the gates, a very big army, ready to invade. And it just gets worse from there. Elend and the crew have to figure out a way to save Luthadel and Vin won't stop being annoying.Okay, lets talk Vin. She's the reason for the minus-half-star. It would've been 4 stars but the ending was... shocking, and made up for a lot of things. Things like the excessive amounts of teenage angst and moments of stupidity on Vin's part. I spent the majority of the book unhappy with her and wishing that the author wouldn't focus so much on her an Elend's relationship, which I didn't really care about in the first place. It made the book drag a little but things got back on track eventually.Other than that, things were good. I was happy to have the crew back, even if I still do miss Kell a lot. There were new characters introduced, one of whom I loved very much (Tindwyl). The writing and the world was great, as expected. I loved the book as a whole. The ending was awesome and set up the last book of this particular trilogy very well, while also giving up no hint as to what we can expect. I'm excited to read it.

Simply outstanding
The first book was great. Interesting, intriguing, wouldn't let you go. A pager turner. The second book managed to be better. The ending is breathtaking. I can't wait to read the next one.

Great story, lack of physical quality
The story is great although I found the middle part a bit drawn out with explaining feelings. However the main ending was amazing and I read the last 300 pages without putting the book away. The physical quality of the 10th anniversary book cover (the version I read) was lacking. The cover looks amazing but wears VERY quickly. I read the book once, no traveling etc and the edges have suffered greatly on the places I held the book in my hands. This can be seen in the picture where I compare a new one (the hero of ages) with the well of ascension
