The Beach

best movie ever! Will never get sick of it

Been there done that...:) ...& French girls ARE beautiful.

For some reason, I find The Beach infinitely fascinating. There's a mysterious act of violence near the beginning that draws DiCaprio's character into the search for an isolated island paradise. I don't even mind that adolescent males feature so prominently in the plot with boredom and bravado driving much of the decision making. Of course, the females aren't all that perfect either.The bored 20 somethings actually establish a primitive utopia free of most of the demands of civilization. The main rule is not to divulge the existence of the island paradise.. It's interesting watching as the youthful colony lives close to nature. Much of their diet consists of fish they catch and they build a rudimentary shelter. It's an endless summer of swimming, playing volleyball and lolling around with friends.Unfortunately there's no escaping danger from nature or other people. The colony evolves maladaptive coping strategies, underreacting or ignoring serious problems while overreacting to less pressing concerns. DiCaprio has a sort of breakdown in the middle of this experience that I'm not sure anyone else could've performed. Also, these are college kids funded with money from home. The vacation has to end for all of them eventually. All except for the female leader of the cult/colony who either has a very indulgent family or is on some sort of welfare.The Beach of course lends itself to comparison with The Lord of the Flies. That these are young adults means they don't regress to the same extent as children. Within group violence is almost nonexistent for instance. They're perhaps too civilized to survive long outside a world without police or emergency rooms. At the end, violence from men who do know how to function in a world with few protections force the young adults back into the safety of society. The return to the mundane in the form of internet cafes becomes a nice catharsis at the end.

Haven't watched it since it came out- really great movie.

Great movie, one of my favorites. The moral of the story is something we can all relate to.

One of the best island movie in history, highly recommend.

Read the book. It’s much better. The beginning of the movie is good and pretty true to the book but the end just derails.

Ok so we traveled to Thailand, Ko Tao and Koh Phangan. Read the novel during that time. Loved the concept. Couldn't put the book down. Bought the movie. My friends said the movie was "Ok, I guess." So I had low expectations. I liked it. But it depends on who you are as a person. Having my experiences in Thailand definitely skews my view of the movie so bear that in mind.
