XL: a See-Through Camera Lucida Drawing Tool

I seen the video on this and was a little skeptical. I bought it and it was great. I wish I have this a long time ago. The only draw back is the drawing pencil or pen is a little blurry and you need a good light source. It is spot on for replicating pretty much anything.

I originally purchased this device for help with my still life paintings. I wanted to use this device to make my transfer to canvas shorter and more accurate. But when I received this product, I spent countless hours trying to use it properly. It is easy to assemble, but that is where the ease of use stops. It took me a couple of days to actually get my project in view on the mirror part. Once I was able to see my object to make the image large on my canvas I had to lower the neck of the device almost to the canvas, and because I have back issues I had to hovered over my canvas standing in a very awkward position to use this device. I have only used it the one time I explained here above. It is not worth the money. Total waste of money and time!

This is a little difficult to use, you still need some talent and a steady hand. But all in all, it works like it should. Just don't the idea this will make you an instant artist. Well built and sturdy.

This product works but not as easily as I would like. Light intensity is important. So are the angles of the subject and lucida - if not straight the image gets skewed and it is difficult to trace accurately because the pencil is not where it appears to be. The biggest problem, however, is that you are limited to a paper size of about 9"x12". The instructions say the image can be expanded by raising the lucida above the paper, which is correct. The problem is that the paper soon gets too far away to do a decent trace job. The video actually shows a guy with the paper on the floor and his pencil on the end of a stick! Not and ideal situation. A decent product overall but not what I hoped for.

The advertisement shows a clear image that can easily be traced onto canvas or paper. I found the image too faint to be seen and the arm was not stable enough to keep the image usable. Great idea, but certainly NOT worth the money I spent!

Great quality, expect a bit of a learning curve for the beginner artist

Poor construction. I expected more. The stand is too small. The mirror assembly isn't able to hold it's position which means if you get your head a bit too close, even the slightest touch will knock it off target. This is a $95 purchase and I expected much more.

Great concept but definitely not for everyone. I purchased primarily to teach my young children about drawing in perspective. They enjoy using it and the concept is being taught. Using it myself, there is a learning curve getting my hand to accurately trace along the mirrored image, but it is a fun to use tool. It definitely will not turn a person into a high-end artist (& in most cases even into a low-end artist) if you don’t already have an eye for drawing detail and proper shading techniques, so don’t quit your day jobs. If you have no clue how to draw, you will probably have a difficult time with this concept as well. If you’re looking to try a different technique to supplement (and in some cases improve upon) knowledge and skill you already have, this is a unique tool that could be beneficial.The product seems to be decent quality and was adequately packaged. I found it pretty easy to figure out how to assemble and use without reading the instructions.
