Farewell Matt Smith UPDATED
First off this is a bit cheeky getting people to repurchase specials from previous sets. However I will bite because Matt Smiths final performance was truly amazing! As with many overly ambitious episodes of who, this promised more than it could deliver and although it was good they couldnt find the balance. Either make it longer and make use of the weeping angels and other protagonists more effectively or drop them from the story and then make it flow a bit better. That gripe should make me drop this to three stars but Matt's final speech had me sitting with a lump in my throat as I remembered all the adventures he had taken us on! There was so much variety. Moffat seemed a bit unsure in places with what to do with the plot he had set up but Matt showed what a truly great actor he is at the end. There was no whining self referential farewell, kicking and screaming like the last doctor. Matt was dignified and his leaving really did feel like it was too soon. Though I thought David Tennant was superb, toward the end his doctor was becoming egotistical and self congratulating. More Russel T Davies fault than Davids but I had had enough. Matt brought an energy and innocence as though the Doctor was literally reborn. I know he has had a few poor episodes but for me he is the best Doctor of any series, classic or new. I wont spoil it if you have yet to view it but the final 10 mins are worth the price of the disc. A fitting end to a great 11th/12th timelord! Thank you Matt for giving me a great few years of adventures in time and space.UPDATE: I missed a few things. Having gone back and rewatched it I have a greater appreciation of the episode. There are loads of subtle references to this doctors time in the tardis and also previous incarnations. The battle music played during the silence will fall speech is that of the tenth doctors as an example. This is a love letter to all the fans that bothered to follow the doctor through all the ups and downs. It reminds me of Babylon 5 in that you were rewarded for your investment. I'm sorry some don't get it but ultimately I feel appreciated for supporting the eleventh and Ifor the negs out there I can only ask you go back and watch series 5-7 again. If you don't want to do that I understand but base your reviews with that restriction in mind.

Raggedy Man. Good Night.
The excellent Matt Smith's final turn as the renegade timelord is released as a standalone featured (albeit supported by past Christmas specials A Christmas Carol (not bad), The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe (largely dull) and The Snowmen (okay-ish) with his last story 'The Time of the Doctor'...When a family Christmas turkey lunch goes inexplicably awry for Clara (blame a nude Doctor!), she is enlisted by our erstwhile hero as he is asked to investigate a message that's being continually broadcast across space and time. When they discover it emanate's from a human settlement (suitably called 'Christmas') on the Doctor's final resting place of Trenzalore, things take an odd turn for the worst when the message is revealed to be from a crack in reality in the town's clock tower and is being sent by the Time Lords, themselves... Cue a stalemate as The Doctor exiles Clara and vows to stay and protect Christmas - no matter the cost to himself. When Clara returns to find him 300 years later, now old and without any regenerations left she begins a bargain plea with his race in order to save her beloved timelord friend one way or another...This episode, although a more sombre and downbeat affair than David Tennants' bombastic send-out in 'The End of Time' allows lead Matt Smith to go out on a high note. Showing the full range of his 'old man in a young body' schtick - writer Steven Moffatt gives his Doctor a dignified bow and apart from the fact this one doesn't feel as 'epic' when compared to the previous Doctor's exit - it does, on repeat viewings act as a deeper experience. Not as emotional maybe, but certainly dramatic. Smith is excellent as always, as is the much maligned Clara (Jenna Coleman really gives her character much needed weight) and Jamie Payne's direction is of the usual high standard set by the show's producers.BBC's UK Blu-Ray release presents the episode with a great transfer bolstered by vibrant audio. Alongside the other three episodes, extra features include: Behind the Lens featurette, Tales from the Tardis and Farewell to Matt Smith. All in all, this is an above average episode and a lovely swan song for Smith's 11th Doctor. Oh yeah, you also get to see the wonderous eyebrow musings of the great Peter Capaldi as this new Doctor finally makes his entrance. New kidneys, indeed.

Essential viewing
There were some episodes that were repeated on the series disks but some new ones. I didn't initially realise I needed this as part of the story. I collected all the series then for this after.

BD Plays on Zone A (US) Player-Not just B.
These BD discs have NO Zone insignia printed on label or discs. The ratings symbols of UK and Ireland on front normally indicate Region 2/Zone B discs. Eqbrat's review, however, and the cheaper price, made me take a chance. I am delighted to say he was right. These BD's play on my Zone A Samsung, US player.I wanted series 7 on BD. It was $45 - $65, and didn't include one Christmas show - Time of the Doctor. (Neither Series 7 nor Vol's I & II included Day of the Doctor, so wasn't included in my figures. )I priced used Series 7: Vol. I and II, and this Christmas package. The total was much cheaper, and included all of Series 7, and the missing Christmas episode. I consolidated Vol. I and II into a 4 disc case, and am a happy camper. Thanks eqbrat.

Genial
