My son read this while we spent 2 weeks jn the andes near machu picchu
Just came back with my 9 year old son and 13 year old daughter from a 3 week trip to PERU (we visited machu picchu twice). I was homeschooling them while on this trip. So before we left i ordered a bunch of fiction and non fiction books about Peru (some to read before, during or after this trip)That being said, this book was interesting to my son and even my daughter wanted to read it. It was informative and it helped prepare my kids for this trip.My son read the bulk of this book while on his OWN ADVENTURE in the sacred valley. Coincidentally, when the boy arrived in cusco, we had just arrived in cusco after spending a week deeper in ollantaytambo. It was so cool to see my 9 year old feel like he was the character. No issues with seller or shipping. Book was as described.

I'm not sure who the audience today is supposed to be?
Secret of the Andes by Ann Nolan Clark won the Newbery Medal in 1953. While I personally found the book disappointing it does have a few good things going for it. 1. the Setting of the book is unique to Newberry books. I enjoyed reading the author's descriptions of the Andes mtns. 2, the plot rotates around an incan boy raised in the mtns of Peru. No other book tells a story like this in the Newbery Library, where a native from another culture deals with the changing world around them. 3. The writing itself is superb! I felt the author was very descriptive and really was an expert in telling the story.BUT, with all of that said, there were issues that made the book my least favorite so far in the Newbery list. 1. The book has a very slow start, 2. This one is key: I don't know who is supposed to read this now. What age? I think that a 10 year old will get lost in the story and not understand and that 13+ will find the story boring and not invest the time in it. Perhaps this question is an indictment on the our current culture and the lack of time investing in reading, but I think this book has lost it's audience. **This, while not Clark or the book's fault is a problem. The year that Secret of the Andes won the Newbery, Charlotte's Web was in contention, yet did not win. How is that possible.

Beautifully told story
The Secret of the Andes is a very moving story of a modern Inca boy with a very esoteric connection to his Inca past. I raise llamas, and have a great interest in these wonderful creatures and the people who saved them from extinction during the Spanish 'conquest'. I couldn't put this book down.It uses high language and a lot of esoteric imagery. I read it to my seventh grade students who found it much more interesting when I played "Sukay" music of the Andes, and passed around photos of native Quechua people and llamas. The story was very believable. It helps to have some knowledge of Inca beliefs, the history of the Spanish 'conquest' and a knowledge of llamas. If you have this information, the story seem more like history than fiction.

A true beauty
My daughter read this book for her book club and a unit study with her curriculum moving beyond the page. I had never read it before but read along here and there with her and was just in awe about the writing style and story as well. She really enjoyed the book, traveling through Peru, hearing and learning about the culture. This was a wonderful book.

Not the first time.
This was a great preteen-teen book. The story of the Indians and the gold was fantastic. The old man keeps a secret from the boy. The boy it turns out is of royal decent and must be the knowledge keeper of his dynasty's secret gold cache. Overall this was a very easy, interesting, and well written book.
