Can't loose when watching great actors, even though it's quite amusing in places, when it shouldn't be.

Disappointing Transfer of a Classic British '60s Film
I can only echo the thoughts of the other reviewers on here.I was disappointed that, once again, this not the full-length cut of the film being offered on home media (it is around ten minutes shorter than it should be according to reference books i have looked at, as i have never had the privilege of seeing the full, uncut version), and was also rather underwhelmed by the general look of the print. Earlier scenes set within the shadowy interiors of country houses and the like have a notable haze, although the later half shot on location in Turkey did look reasonably impressive by comparison.i would like imprints such as Eureka (Masters of Cinema) or Powerhouse Films' Indicator label to perhaps have a crack at giving THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE the attention it deserves. A real shame and a missed opportunity.

Great Film.
For a satirical account of possibly one of the greatest military blunders of all time, this film is well worth the price.

A profound disappointment..
After a long wait, finally a release for" Charge of the Light Brigade" and what a let down! the print varies between so-so,grainy and poor, as is the sound quality. I was expecting so much more, this was one of the seminal British films of the sixties, the culmination of Tony Richardson's career to that point deserving of so much more than this shoddy release. The last good version was released on a BFI VHS decades ago. This gem deserves a proper restoration to the original length and quality. Final Cut? Final Insult is closer to the mark.

Final Cut Blu-ray - dreadful quality
This bare-bones Blu-ray from Final Cut is to be avoided. I love this film and it's so sad there isn't a proper full-length version available anywhere. Overall, the picture quality is no improvement over the old DVDs and in some scenes looks even worse. Part of the problem is that for the English sequences director Tony Richardson, DP David Watkin and colour consultant Lila de Nobili decided to use several layers of filters, aiming to enhance the film's period 'look' which now looks blurred and out of focus. However, there is a noticeable improvement in picture quality when the British forces land in the Crimea. Even so, this is not remotely acceptable for a Blu-ray disc.

Antique Lenses Employed
To clarify the various complaints about the poor definition of TCLB; according to Tony Richardson's memoirs this was quite deliberate, intended to give a period feel, as if looking at Victorian photographs. This technique was used in the first English half of the film & was achieved by mounting antique Ross lenses onto the Panavision cameras, possibly the first time this sort of manipulation was attempted. Perhaps the resultant loss of definition & veiling was a little too heavy.By 1975 Stanley Kubrick was using ultra wide aperture lenses to film by candle light in 'Barry Lyndon', & so it goes on. Today it is very common to find antique lenses used in historical dramas, & every rare wide aperture antique lens that reaches the market fetches an astronomical price at auction.
