"Crna macka, beli macor" to give it its original title is a work of pure genius. The plot is that Matko is a small time trader on the River Danube. He has a 17 year old son in the shape of Zare. Matko does a deal with a very unsavoury gangster Dadan who has a penchant for bling, nose candy and questionable songs.Matko ends up oweing him money big time and by way of a bargain Matko agrees that his son will marry Dadan’s sister the improbably named Afrodita. What follows is a tale of criminals, love, gypsy music, more crims, loads of animals, lady shaving and a car eating pig to name but a few. This film is just mad and bonkers.Director and writer Emir Kusturica is a visionary film maker and if you only ever see one of his films then make it this. The acting is wonderful, the comedy relentless, the ideas and imagination unparalleled and the animals are always a joy. This is cinema at its most glorious best, where it does new things in new ways and has a great big laugh at the same time. There are a couple of cats too just in case you were wondering – this is up there in my top ten films of all time – recommended till the cows, or even pigs, come home.

If you don't mind reading subtitles this is an enjayable watch, I like watching foreign movies and they have a completely different take on things and I was not disappointed by this film.Without giving away the whole film It's basically about 2 families that are in trying to con each other and the funny carry ons that come with.

Matko is a small time hustler, living by the river Danube with his 17 year old son Zare. After a failed business deal he owes money to the much more successful gangster Dadan. Dadan has a sister, Afrodita, that he desperately wants to see get married so they strike a deal: Zare is to marry her. But none of the two care much for an arranged marriage: Zare is in love with Ida, Afrodita is waiting for the man of her dreams.

Great film with some excellent acting performances, particularly from the villain, and incredible music you may find yourself getting up and dancing to in front of the TV.My attempt to describe it is: riotous gypsy mafia romantic comedy caper. It's completely bonkers and at times is nonsense, utterly adorable nonsense. A scene at the end, involving a Goose, had me in stitches.

The hero here is a man who wants to get married but is looking for the love of his life - a diminutive princess, everybody else are a bunch of chisellers. How the hero and heroine meet matches traversing the eiger. Everything is thrown into the pot including the director's trade mark flock of geese. The gold diggers of life have got their claws into a gangster that makes john dillinger look a saint. There is no double cross that cannot become a triple cross. The characters are gross - problem is I have met people like this. However love conquers all and everyone gets their just desserts. The only problem is you have to follow the story as it rushes by at 100 mph.

Probably a matter of taste, but if you like insane surrealistic humour as well as mad lively music that is off the beaten track, (Balkan in this case), then this has both in spades. Sustains itself from beginning to end as well as having some classic set piece scenes. I won't even begin to describe the plot.

Well done and accurate atmosphere of early 90s in eastern Europe.
