McGuffey First Reader - HB

Awesome Books!!!!!
I can't say enough good things about McGuffey's! I have the revised set (minus 1 book) and the primer and first reader in the original version. Both have their pros and cons, but I think I prefer the original version for the moral and religious content. The goal isn’t a lesson a day, but mastery of a lesson before moving on. The child should be able to read the words in each lesson well with proper inflection, spell the words in each lesson, understand the lesson (and in this day in age, that also can teach a bit of history at times), memorize & recite parts of or the entire lesson and in the original (Mott Media) versions, moral lessons are a huge part of each lesson. There was also supposed to be an emphasis on oral speaking (something we don’t see much of in today’s education) and not to recite passages in monotone, but with proper inflection. The grammar books in the McGuffey’s series weren't meant to use until 4th grade. Until that point grammar should be gently taught as part of the reading lesson within the reader as it’s encountered. The pictures were meant to be part of the lesson as well. The picture was to be studied and discussed before the lesson was read. You’ll find the Original Mott Media version has a moral to each story and many mentions of prayer, God and the Bible. The Revised American book Company version is less moral. Actually edited to remove the Bible emphasis. Still better than today’s books, but much less of a Christian emphasis in the revised version.

Classic and Effective
I'm teaching my girl how to write and read using the McGuffey series. She loves the pictures and she's taken to writing the words in the word lists provided in the books. She started out wondering what we were up to and now she'll open the books on her own and work on her writing. There isn't a better way to teach your child than book, pen and paper. We're using the primer for the writing work and at night I read her the second and third books in the series. As these books were written by a Cambridge professor in 1901 you can expect a few referenced to be a bit outdated but the values and lessons taught are not.The stories are written very well and speak incredibly well to the intelligence of a young audience challenging their young minds while teaching them valuable lessons about values and even, sometimes, God.If this were 100 years into the future I would recommend them still.

Great moral, godly stories, and simple lessons.
I love the original McGuffey readers as they have many stories that talk about God and/or moral lessons. They have simple vocabulary that progresses; words to pronounce at end of each story before reading. They go well with the Spelling book too. This one is probably a 2-3rd grade reading level if your child is in public school.

This is great
I use this for my young children. One of them has finished this, the other is working her way through. I like the stories, and they teach a good lesson. I like that my children's vocabulary is strengthened with this series.

nice but it has changed from the original!
Beautiful little book but it is missing some of what was in the original. I had an older copy that burned in a house fire. It will work for my grandson, though. I also have the McGuffey speller for him and it is the same as the old one I had.
