I couldn’t recommend the entire line of McGuffy’s enough. Truly and old gem that has withstood the test of time for teaching. The literacy rate as well as comprehensive understand would be drastically improved by our schools using this method. My son who just turned four has been reading these books and they truly are wonderful and a great place for a parent to start teaching reading!

I absolutely love the McGuffey readers. I thought I'd like the McGuffey speller as well, but I do not! Don't get me wrong, it may work for some, it just isn't what I was expecting. I home school my two boys (ages 5 and 6). The first few sections work for the younger kids, but after that, it becomes quite difficult. If you are looking for a good progressive spelling curriculum, I highly recommend Phonics Pathways in conjunction with a Spelling Workout workbook. That is what we are using now and we love it. I'll keep my McGuffey Progressive Spelling Book to use as a reference in the future, but I certainly don't like it as a main resource for our spelling curriculum.

Love this book, as I do all the McGuffey's books! The words are broke down into parts so it really emphasizes phonics. Will be using this a lot to help my 5 year old learn to read.

The best set of resources of the many out there.

This is a good book that list many words every child should be able to spell. With the USA having the highest illiteracy rate in the world and witnessing many high school students that can not spell nose, knows, and no correctly, I think everyone needs one of these books.

My daughter homeschools, and she uses both of these spellers...She also loves the boxed set of readers!! I had them, and she asked for mine to use with my 7 grandchildren....

I purchased this book along with others as an aid to help my second grader who is struggling with spelling. it breaks words very clearly into syllables, gives pronunciation of syllables in a chart format, and gives some specifics about ending syllables which were very helpful. However, there are passages to read about always keeping your dog outside -- it does not belong in the house, never feed your cat too much -- it won't catch any mice, God made seals so they can live in the northern cold climate (Ever been to San Diego harbor? It's not in the north and has plenty of seals!), and about how God makes it rain so that little boys can go inside to learn about things in the house. Additionally, the coding system for pronouncing specific vowel sounds is decodable for me, but difficult and confusing for my son. The charts are also not arranged as well as more modern ones. I will be using some of the concepts while teaching my son to count syllables and will be adding the special ending syllables (i.e. tian, tion, cious, etc) to our flashcard regimen. I will not have him use this book directly -- no need to undo his science knowledge to learn spelling.
