"Gold" Connie Francis. A superb double CD comprising all her 35 US chart contenders!
"Who's Sorry Now", a ballad dating back to 1923, catapulted Newark-born Concetta Franconero to super stardom as Connie Francis in early 1958 after she begrudgingly yielded to her father's request she record the oldie.. She went on to score a staggering 35 American Top 40 hits (32 cracked the Top 30!), six of which were double-sided smashes. Connie Francis enjoyed her final US hit with her remake of the 1952 Eddy Howard hit "Be Anything (But Mine)" which topped out at # 25 in June 1964. "Gold" chronicles all her singles releases up to 1970 and even though most of the tracks 14 - 25 on disc two failed to chart quite a few of them are scintillating. I particularly enjoyed "Wedding Cake" which barely dented the Hot 100 in '69.The 2-CD set is a US only release and UK hits such as "You Always Hurt The One You Love" (1958), "Plenty Good Lovin'" (1959)(self-penned!), "Valentino" (1960), "My Child" (1965) and "Jealous Heart"(1966) are, needless to say, not included. Todd Everett's liner notes are informative and to the point. The accompanying booklet also lists producers, arrangers, conductors and time of release all of which is bound to please the serious record collector. The overall sound quality is excellent with most tracks in pristine stereo. Connie Francis possessed one of the most beautiful voices ever committed to wax and is one of the all-time most successful female singers. For anyone who would like to take a stroll down memory lane to relive the Francis magic, this set is a must-have!
