The instructions are very clear, and there was enough material to make two with some modifications (using green for the ‘hair’ on the second one). Liked it so much I bought another kit as a gift for a friend. Great if you have mid-level crochet skills – i.e., you’ve made things before and understand the basics, but haven’t done a lot of fancy crafts, or haven’t picked up the hook in a while, and don’t have the time/energy/motivation to buy the materials for a pattern. It was fun to make and I enjoyed it.

Absolutely thrilled to share my experience with the this Crochet Kit for Beginners! Okay, so picture this: a cozy afternoon, me and this adorable kit, and a bunch of yarn that looked like a rainbow exploded. 😄 I've always wanted to try crocheting, but honestly, I thought I'd end up in a tangle of yarn. But this kit made everything so approachable. The step-by-step video tutorials were like having a patient friend guiding me – they broke down each stitch in a way that even I could understand. And can we talk about the cuteness overload of the finished piece? It was like instant gratification in yarn form! So here's the best part: it only took me an afternoon! I was kind of thinking I'd spend days wrestling with hooks and yarn, but nope! The instructions were so clear that I found myself getting the hang of it way faster than I expected. The stitches just kind of flowed, and by the end of it, I had this super charming thing I made myself. Bottom line – if you're looking for a fun and adorable way to spend an afternoon, the Crochetta Crochet is great. Seriously, I went from "what's a single crochet?" to "heck yeah, I'm a crocheting champ!" in just a few hours. I really wish I could do them all!

It’s so cute! I didn’t know that it was supposed to be a cat toy. The instructions says to put catnip it in (not included). It was a fast project. I think it’s like three hours max. I don’t think it took me three hours, though. That’s just a guesstimate :) It does require careful counting. I’m pretty horrible at keeping count during crochet so I’m sure there are some mistakes in my fish…but isn’t it adorable anyway? I love mine :) Oh, and there are enough materials to make four fish. You could make a mobile out of them :) Stitches/Difficulty: Chain Stitch Crochet in the Round Double Crochet ** Half Double Crochet ** Magic Ring Single Crochet Single Crochet Decrease Single Crochet Increase Slip Stitch Treble Crochet **** Most Rounds in a Part: 14 Most Stitches in a Row: 15 The more stars, the rarer the stitch is for a crochet kit. It’s a very short project, but there is a lot of counting because there are a lot of stitch changes. If you’re super detail oriented you could finish this as a first project, but I think most people (me, included) would have an easier time if they finished and easier project first to get the hang of everything. There are a lot of stitches to learn for this one if you don’t know any. This is my eightieth completed project from a crochet kit and I have been crocheting for eleven months now. Instructions: Paper: I used both the paper and video instructions for this project. The paper instructions were very good. They are written clearly and use a uniform notation (the same one most these kits use). I didn’t know what they meant by “gap” so I had to watch the video. Video: You need a QR code reader (like the “Camera” app on an iPad) to access the video instructions. There is not a printed URL you can type in for the instructions. The video is shown nicely closeup so you can see the stitches. The hands show you what stitch you will be going into next and work slowly. They show each new stitch twice (once in the project and the second time in a window in a window with some other kind of yarn). The captions are at the bottom in black text outlined in white while the round instructions are in the same font but on the top left. There is a narration. It’s a really well done video. Materials: The yarn is very soft and I love the colors it comes in :) I had plenty of yarn left over. The 2.5mm crochet hook is a grippier (slower) beginner’s one. It’s comfortable, but I like going fast so I used my own hook. The safety doll eyes come with the backs :) Yay! The snippers now say “Crochetta” on them. I think that makes them a lot prettier. They also cut better than they used to :) Yay! The stitch markers worked and are the same kind included in other kits of this kind. The tapestry needle is metal and very easy to use :) What I Did Different: I used the “For Test” yarn to make my fish’s body. There was plenty of it :)

I absolutely had a terrible time following the videos. This was the first crochet kit I tried and while I loved that it came with practice yarn the video was hard to follow both because of the teacher being very difficult to understand but also because it was hard to see what exactly she was doing with her hands. The video has a fast and slow version of each step which just made me more frustrated as it was slowed down but not clearer. The yarn is reasonably easy to work with but not as easy as other yarns. I ended up getting other kits to learn the steps and will return to this one when I have enough of a foundation that I am not relying on the videos to teach me the stitches and just using them as guides..

I will start with the reason this is four stars instead of 5: the yarn is fingering weight which is just way too small for a beginner yarn. Many beginner sets come with “beginner yarn” which doesn’t fray, and these sets that come with tiny yarn and needles are just a little more challenging for someone just learning how to crochet. I am not a beginner, so I found this pretty simple and a quick project! The yarn is soft and both the books and included videos (QR codes on each book) are super helpful for not only learning beginner stitches, but also a slowed down, step by step guide for making the actual project. Anything small not included could easily be found in any other YouTube video, but I found this very easy to follow. The little groot-like tree man is super cute! It comes with all the tools you need to begin, so you don’t really need to worry about having to purchase supplies to make this, there is even test yarn to practice on before you start. The supplies are all great quality so you can keep them when you are done and use them to start your crochet collection! VERY reusable and the hooks are ergonomic and easy to use. Overall, this was a fun beginner project and would be great for someone who has never done crochet ever and just needs a jumping-off point. As I said, the only complaint is that the smaller yarn can be really frustrating to work with if you have never done crochet before.
