return to the classic cosmic cop GL Corps feeling
I enjoyed this story quite a bit, and spanning 12 issues allows the story to breathe, the main character to reflect and develop, and the world-building to be extensive. The setting (in a far, far sector of space with a long history between a complex array of species) reminds me of some of my favorite Green Lantern stories of the bygone century, stories that attempted and often succeeded to be taken seriously as societal science fiction and not just as costumed hero capers. Our protagonist, Sojourner "Jo" Mullein, is likable and relatable as she creatively explores her ring's powers, navigates personal relationships in a strange world, and uncovers the hidden turbulence under the City Enduring's seemingly peaceful surface. It's interesting to see how she stays in contact with Earth at this great distance. The character also provides an examination of all-too-Earthly traumas, from serving in a warzone, to fighting the cycle of race-based police brutality. Jo interrogates her role as law enforcement, knowing all too well the ways the mechanisms of law don't get applied equally to all persons. The artwork is immersive, with lots of pleasing colors, alien cityscapes and cosmic vistas. Well-done battles and lots of background details. I'd say there's definitely some aesthetics from Fifth Element, Star Trek, and 2000AD blended in (I must be dating myself). I also love Jo's uniform; there have been so many great variations on the basic GL duds and this one is an instant classic. My main critique is, it seemed like the writer sometimes was too ambitious and threw in a few too many concepts and plot points that couldn't possibly all be tied up in the given space & pace. However, that's a solid case for doing a follow-up "Far Sector 2", which I would anticipate enjoying just as much. I'm glad Jo continued to appear in GL comics and I'm interested in checking those out. I passed this book on to a friend's teen, who I hope will enjoy it too.

Far Sector
Far Sector by N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell is an absolute masterpiece that grips you from the first page and doesn’t let go. Lantern Mullein is thrust into a mystery on a planet where emotions have been suppressed for centuries to prevent violence, only for someone to take drugs that restore feelings—leading to murder. The layers of this story, from its intricate worldbuilding to its mind-bending twists, kept me hooked, feeling like I was being pulled into an ocean of intrigue. The emotional rollercoaster had me in tears, and the combination of Jemisin’s incredible storytelling and Campbell’s stunning art creates a perfect, immersive experience. Every chapter is a visual and narrative feast, and the final act feels like a plunge into chaos as everything unravels in the most satisfying way. This is a 10/10, 5-star must-read that left me wishing I could stay in its beautifully crafted world forever. If you love gripping mysteries, complex worlds, and emotional depth, don’t hesitate—read this now!

Solid storytelling and art about an unconventional Green Lantern
I read the graphic novel collection because it was nominated for a Hugo Award this year, which it did end up winning. I would not have read it otherwise, since I don't read a lot from DC, but I was very pleased that this crossed my path. I was intrigued by the worldbuilding of the civilization the protagonist visits, by the conflicts that arise and by the character revelations and development. I did disagree with some of the decisions the protagonist made. I thought the art was very solid but not stunning.

One of the Best GL Stories
This book was a standout. A new Lantern is great, especially since we don't have to focus on a previously established lantern. Lots of good mystery and detective style story telling. I loved the art style. The smaller size of the book didn't do anything specific for me, but I could see how someone would like it. Definitely need more stories with Jo

A Modern Classic
As a long time Green Lantern fan I can honestly say this is one of the BEST Green Lantern stories of the past decade! The art & writing blend together to make an engaging and exciting experience! A must buy for GL fans old and new! And a great way to introduce the concept to new readers.

Beautiful in words and images
I’m a huge fan of N.K. Jemisin’s work. The Great Cities series and the misnamed Inheritance Trilogy (hat tip to Douglas Adams) are some of the most mind expanding, thought provoking fantasy I’ve ever read. Now she takes her brilliant perspective to the realm of the Green Lantern Corp, and comes up with an entirely original take. One that, with the gorgeous artwork of Jamal Campbell, creates a beautiful, terrifying, confounding, eye and brain popping world. I sincerely hope they have many more adventures planned with Lantern Sojourner Mullein.
