Q: Should I use distilled water or purified water?

Distilled water is recommended.

Q: Can this unit be sat on carpet or hardwood floors or does it need to sit on something heat resistant?

I have mine on older laminate floors and it's been fine for the past year or so. The heat panels are at the top of the back and sides. The heated footpad is on a cord and can be moved or put on top of a towel. It's nice but doesn't get as hot as a real sauna.

Q: Can this be used with out steam?

The steam is required to be used in this sauna.
