Boot Perfection!!
I ordered these boots in the tan color. I normally wear a size 7 in western boots with more of a pointed toe as well as many other shoes depending on the manufacturer. I can also wear a 6 1/2 in some. For me, length as well as the arch placement are most important in a shoe or boot. I've had 6 1/2 shoes where the length was perfect, but the arch was in the wrong place for my foot. I have a pair of Frye Carmen X Stitch ankle boots in a 6 1/2. The length is fine, but the arch placement is a little off. However, those are a completely different style of boot with a taller heel.My foot is a normal width and my heel is a little on the narrow side. I was so uncertain what size to order based on all the other reviews. So I ordered a 6 1/2 and a 7. The 7 was a bit too long and loose around my foot. The 6 1/2 was perfection!! The arch support is great and in the right place. The heel slipped a bit as expected with new boots. The foot fits nicely without pinching or my foot wabbling around. I've been wearing them everyday to work for a week with the typical medium weight socks I always wear.I also ordered a can of the Frye Leather Conditioning Cream that arrived a couple days after the boots. The cream did a great job of softening the leather. It also darkened the boots somewhat, but that was fine with me. I expected it would take a few weeks to break them in considering they are made from thick leather that is meant to last. I was prepared to use my tried and true "blow dryer in the boot" method to work on any snug or stiff areas, but I never had to. In less than a week the heel has stopped slipping and the boots are really forming to my feet -- no sore spots, tight toes, or blisters. The sole material is awesome as well even on frosty and slippery surfaces and helps cushion the bottom of your feet so you don't feel rocks through the boots.I realize a lot of people may shy away from spending so much money on a pair of boots, but these are worth the investment: they are comfortable when you get the correct size, they are constructed extremely well, they will obviously last many many years, and they're smart looking boots. I get complements on them every day!

Exceeded my expectations!
I think I may have a problem with Frye boots. Well, an addiction really. Full disclosure, this is my 5th pair of Fryes. They join the Harness 12R, the Melissa Logo, the Veronica combat, and the Jane Strappy.Just before getting these Harness 8R in TAN, I had ordered the Heath Heel Bootie. They were a real disappointment. Bad construction, ratty leather, and a much higher price tag. I did some research and learned that there are a small selection of Fryes still made in the USA. It is this group of Fryes that have some of the better manufacturing techniques, such as Goodyear Welting. This type of welting contributes alot of staying power to the boot and allows it to be re-soled. Just wanted to include some of this info in my review in case it helps others make a decision. In the future, I will stick with the core lines of Frye: harness, engineer, campus styles.I was looking for another shorter boot to take me into warmer months. I am planning on wearing with skirts, shorts, dresses in spring and summer. I wanted a brown and agonized for a while over which one: blazer brown, dark brown, crazy horse. I made the right choice in the strangely labeled TAN. The boot color is exactly as pictured on the Amazon product page. It is a rich, cool (not orangey) "bomber jacket" brown. The boots are only very lightly distressed looking - I prefer to do my own distressing.I have ordered all of my Fryes in 8.5. This is 1/2 to 1 full size UP FROM MY NORMAL 7.5 shoe size. I do not agree with the other posters that Fryes must be sized down. The boots (esp. the Harness) are narrow in the toe box. When you size down, it makes the toe area too tight and boot hard to get on and off. I have not found the boots to stretch and I don't want to own a $200+ boot that is too tight. Some heel slippage is both normal and desirable in a boot. It lessens as you break the boot in. These fit exactly the same as my Harness 12Rs in black. The leather has the same matte, oily feel as the black 12Rs. The brown has a softer look and I am thrilled. They are surprisingly heavy for shorter boots, but not a problem for me. I still feel a little guilty about indulging my boot fetish, but the quality and workmanship of the 8Rs helps alot!I have to add that I sincerely hope that Frye does NOT continue in its trend of manufacturing more styles in Mexico and even worse, China. I was mistakenly shipped a pair of Fryes made and China and they had nothing in common with the Harness, except the ridiculous price tag. I fear that my hope is in vain though.Amazon did their usual great job in getting me my boots!!!

Lightening strikes twice!
I cannot believe my luck lately! (Read my review about the Frye Melissa Satchel to know what I'm talking about here)I originally ordered these boots in the size 10 from another vendor, at a reduced, but still much higher price in a color (tan) that I don't like as much. They were too big, even though that's my regular size. I hadn't ordered these at the wonderful $216 price because the only size offered was the 9.5 which I figured would be too small. When the others turned out to be too large and an unappealing color, I went for these.Yippee! Eureka! and Lucky Me! These fit perfectly and the color (dark brown) is much prettier. The leather is also a smoother softer variety that I really like. These are perfect. The left boot is a little hard to pull on, but I'm sure that will improve. I'd be more worried about the heel slippage (just a small amount with these) if not for the many reviews I read.Apparently, if you wear these around enough, the boot will mold to your foot/ankle and mostly eliminate the slippage. I feel confident this will happen because I wore the larger size around the house for a day and the slippage seemed to diminish some, even with the too large size. These boots are gorgeous and so well constructed. The look and feel like they should last a hundred years!

Gorgeous, cheaper then the bay (wait for a sale) ...
Gorgeous, cheaper then the bay (wait for a sale), and very well made. The do fit big. I'm normally a 10 and ordered a 9.5. I might have been able to fit into a 9 length wise but they would probably be too narrow for my wider feet. I got regular width.
