Ray Donovan: The Fifth Season

Ray Donovan is the stuff that real life is made of. Literally.
I loved this show from beginning to end. I'm extremely selective about what I watch and I prefer anything that authentically portrays one-ot-many human conditions. No one should be surprised by season 5. We learned early on that the Donovan men had been traumatized in youth and could clearly see the deep-seated pain and mental anguish that created catastrophe after catastrophe throughout the seasons. Life is a progression and doesn't take place in a box and the Donovans progressions through life have been portrayed expertly. Life is an evolution and whatever we are courageous enough to face within ourselves takes us to great enlightenment and whatever emotional baggage we ignore continues to fester until it eats us alive. Ray Donovan is ahead of its time. Rarely are men comfortable talking about sexual trauma real or in this format and Ray Donovan has taken this very real mental health crisis and blended it with tv drama that is, unfortunately, a real-life drama for many, many men in the world. While some of you may only see a tv show with characters, I see that we are all being reminded that females are not the only victims of sexual abuse and it's devasting psychological effects on the individual as well as society. We are long overdue when it comes to letting go of this stereotype and Ray Donovan puts the subject out there in a way that people can watch it without being depressed into apathy. This show has the power to wake some men up if they can relate to Ray and understand why their lives are steeped in pain and violence. It has definitely woke me up to this truth. To all of you who had a hand in producing Ray Donovan....THANK YOU. I sincerely hope that this isn't the last that we've seen of the Donovans. I believe that I can speak for not just myself, but for many others, and all of those men who can relate to Ray when I say that.we would like to see Ray begin to fight his own demons rather than fighting the world around him....... and we would very much like to see him win. So please ignore the negative Season Five reviews of those who would like to keep Ray in a nice neat, familiar. comfortable box. Quite frankly, his character is already in a box....a pain box. All of you producers have the power to not only create an interesting show but to actually start the conversation more boldly regarding sexual trauma and all of its victims. I can literally see this show helping a lot of men heal just by giving them the acknowledgment that they may not have in real life. Keep up the excellent work and continue to use this platform wisely. I'm touched beyond words.

Love me some Ray!
I will say, I love this show, but this season has been a little heavier than I expected. Making watching slower as I can only do one episode every few days. Just a heavy season. Doesn’t mean it isn’t good though!

All Hail the King and Queen! Give them their Awards
Riveting! Hard to watch, but Oh so good! Liev and Paula deserve Emmys!! Right or wrong, Liev makes you root for Ray...His family is a hot mess, and brother Terry is wrong and meddles too much, hey Abby is not your wife! He made a life decision, that is messed up!! And although too much, too little, too late, Ray made a dying dash for Abby's love during the flashbacks. I mean, he tried and she loved it bc she has always loved him! And ppl like Terry don't realize that! Such a coward Terry is... Ray is only good for him to get him out of a mess (whore house before he gets engaged, Hector Campos training - remember that?).... And I hate that Abby just gave up! No talk of the kids or her family in Boston. She was so worried about her tits not being cut off, that Ray doesn't realize how many times in Season 4 the Dr. called her for surgery and treatment. And boy did he cry!!! Just so believable... I know, I know l it's just a show, and I do have to remind myself of that because this is some good writing and has been such a journey! I know a lot of people want to move pass this, but don't forget we haven't seen the funeral or the graveyard scene with the family yet..lol It's not funny, but some people can't be patient any longer. I can, and can't wait to see the aftermath, again! Hope there is a season 6 because Ray deserves it! Excellent! After episode 8, do yourself a favor and re-watch episode 1, different perspective... Did I say how much I love this show!! :)

To the fair weather Ray Donovan fans...
If you are disappointed in this season, I am afraid you may be missing the point. I do not want to shed too much of a philosophical light on this as I could ruin it, and the entire season (and series for anyone who hasn't seen it), but this show has much more depth than you are seeing if you are annoyed by a series of flashbacks. Ray is devastated by Abby's passing, so of course he is reliving her death; moreover, Paula Malcomson is hardly absent this season. If you love this show, you should be enjoying the character development we are seeing this season. While I appreciate that, at this point in the season you feel like you missed an episode, but this is the frustration of our lead character being shared with the audience. Do not lose sight of the fact that we are building up to the moment when we find out what exactly landed Ray across the desk from C. Thomas Howell. This season is about pieces to a puzzle, friends.

I feel a major twist is coming
Can you all not see the foreshadowing that's like a flashing neon sign? I enjoy the fact that Ray and Abby's marriage is seen in a better light, albeit a bar light, but none the less. I was tired of seeing the two of them tear each other apart. I feel they found their way back to each other. Although, now it's too late for them to enjoy the sense of normalcy, with Abby's death. A classic case of too little, too late. That being said as we watch Ray's world crumble around him in every way. I feel the season's cliffhanger will be that, the character, Natalie will reveal that the baby she's carrying is actually Ray's and not Doug's. Giving Ray a renewed hope for life after Abby's death.

Going to hell in a handcart
It is very easy for the producers of a long running and successful show to carry on with the "same old same old" knowing full well that their faithful audience will be only too happy to continue supporting the programme. Season 5 of Ray Donovan doesn't fall into this trap and for this if nothing else the producers deserve credit for their decision to do things differently - the reasons for which are detailed in the Extras (of which more later). From other reviews it is clear that the change in direction has somewhat divided opinions - for what it's worth personally I had no problems with the flashbacks and dream sequences as they served to illustrate the overlying sense of ongoing grief suffered by Ray Donovan himself as events unfold culminating in Episode 8 which is a pretty tough watch. No longer is Ray in total control of things and his floundering attempts to get both himself and the other members of the Donovan clan back on track (let alone dealing with the problems presented by his clients) kept this viewer engrossed throughout. All the other cast members continue to be interesting in their individual ways and without giving away plot lines it was good to see both Terry and Bunchy achieving a measure of fulfillment which hopefully bodes well for their futures. Having an actress of Susan Sarandon's stature join the cast was a considerable coup and it will be a matter of interest to see how she develops in Season 6 since I thought she was given rather less to do than her character warranted this time around.Unlike in previous Seasons the Audio is in English only as are the Subtitles.Extras comprise features entitled Dog the Dog / On Death and Dying Parts 1 2 and 3 / Nothing Goes Right For Bunchy / Terry Donovan and Parkinson's / Episode 508 Commentary with Paula Malcomson and David Hollander.
