I have an old recipe using bakers chocolate and it says to use 2 squares....in the old days was 1 square equal to 1 oz?

The box says 4 pieces/rectangles equals 1 ounce. Box is about [roughly] the size of a bag of M&Ms [4 ounces] and has sixteen rectangles. Hope this helps. And, for the record, I remember those 1 oz. squares ....
