I dont want it to end!
City of Gods is one of my all-time favourite films, so I had to buy the TV series - City of Men. I wasn't expecting the change of personalities and names of the characters, but I can now only see 'Lil Dice' and 'Steak and Fries' from City of God in their City of Men roles of 'Acerola' and 'Laranjinha'. The story lines are brilliant, unexpected and humorous. I love the the way that the boys act in the film: it is so real.I have watched nearly all of the two series, but I am savouring the last two as i don't want it to end. I hope there will be another series, as I will greatly miss seeing brazil, Acerola and Laranjinha and their adventures, as well as hearing their beautiful language.A MUST BUY!!!!

A gritty, enthralling TV series
I was lent this DVD by my friend who recommended it highly. Neither of us had seen City of God or knew much about the TV series that followed, my friend had picked it up by happy accident. I am so glad she did. This series portrays the reality of life in a favela in Rio, through the eyes of two young boys. As you can imagine, life is pretty tough in the precarious and multitudinous slums - there is not a lot of money for food, shelter is basic and cramped, life is often disrupted by the violence between drug gangs and also the intervention by the police...however, it is not all bad. Despite the difficult circumstances, there is happiness. The community is very caring and friendly towards one another - even the local drug lords spend a lot of time helping people out - the kids are enthusiastic about the local (not-always-open) school, and there are plenty of parties and other entertainments to lift peoples spirits. Our young guides Laranjinha and Acerola are trying to grow up on the side of good, wanting what the rich "playboys" have and yet also being disgusted by how they perceive their lifestyles to be. It is very clear to them that the local drug gangs command a lot of respect, power and money, yet they do their best to resist these temptations, and their various plans for entertainment and money making are fairly innocent. As the series goes on, they come more into contact with some of the richer inhabitants that live by, and their misconceptions (and the misconceptions on the side of the rich people) are revealed. The series manages to be gritty and realistic whilst not being overly preachy. Although a lot of issues are touched upon, it never feels as if the series is trying to tell you what to think, and it's not too pitying either. Life in the slums isn't portrayed as totally miserable - indeed, in the last episode of season 1, a clever dual-narrative shows us that there is unhappiness in the lives of rich and poor alike, and also joy. Most of all, this is a series about the humanity of the people of Rio. Everyone is not always nice to everyone else (there is a lot of racism and class-ism), but the overall feel is that people care about and look out for each other.I have just ordered the next two seasons, and also the films 'City of God', and 'City of Men'. If they are half as good as this, I will be very happy.
