Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry

A Must Read for Anyone Who is Considering Concealed Carry
This book was highly recommended by a number of people across various message boards, so I picked up a copy. I read this book from cover to cover, then purchased two more copies to give to friends who had either recently received or were in the process of receiving their Concealed Carry License. This book is priceless in the vast amounts of knowledge it provides in preparing to choose the Concealed Carry lifestyle. Everything from picking the firearm to carry and why, choosing the type of ammunition to use in your firearm, additional accessories to aid in concealed carry, to preparing mentally for what happens before, during and after an incident where you have to draw your weapon and use it to save a life. Massad Ayoob also gives real life, usable and practical advice from his own real life experiences and the real life experiences of others that he has come in contact with.Once again, this book is priceless in the vast amounts of knowledge it provides. But if there was one theme that Ayoob reiterates through out this book, it is that you should never stop learning about what it takes to safely carry a concealed firearm. This is why I personally highly recommend this book.

Kindle Edition Has Flaws
The book is great but the Kindle edition has blank pages where there are large or many photos. The Hardware chapter is particularly bad in this way. You lose several large sections of text as a result. This is frustrating and should have been detected and corrected during proofreading.

The authoritative book by the authority
Mas Ayoob is a familiar name in gun-related journalism and particularly self defense and concealed carry topics. His career has covered more experiences than most police officers, attorneys and judges would see in a dozen lifetimes related to using a gun in self defense. The author's advice on preparing for and using a self defense carry weapon pale in comparison to the much-needed advice about what comes afterward. If you're going to carry a firearm with the intent to use it when needed (and why would you carry it intending to not use it?), then this book should be at or near the top of your buying list, even before buying the weapon and the holster. Add in a book covering your state's specific laws and regulations and you have a very complete set of the basic information every firearm carrier needs.

good ideas
This is a good book with lots of things to consider. It is good supplemental reading if you decide to take a USCCA (U.S. Concealed Carry Association) course. It helps give you things to consider / ways to "think." Just remember, like anything else: When it comes to "do it yourself" self defense, practice and training "from outside" is hard to replace. This book is much like others such as: "Deadly Force," and "Defend Yourself." They are all good and they all cover much of the same information. Each of the 3 has a few "unique" things of their own. I would still suggest you consider 2 training courses: 1. For Marksmanship, the NRA Basic Pistol course. 2. For Self Defense, the USCCA course.

An important guide for all gun owners and gun enthusiasts.
Any book by Massad Ayoob is well worth reading and this one is no exception. Mas is the expert's expert regarding the use of lethal force and the consequences of doing so. Numerous examples of encounters and their outcomes are presented as well as guidance relative to making the choice of defensive weapons should you decide to arm yourself. If you are a gun owner, you need to read this book. If you are not a gun owner and believe that gun owners are not responsible people, you need to read this book. It will be sobering for both of you.

An excellent resource for those new to concealed carry
Massad Ayoob's writing is clear, concise, and packed with obvious signs of many years of experience in law enforcement. The Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry (2nd edition) is an excellent, no-nonsense guide to concealed carry. It includes general overviews of carry laws, reasons to carry, legal considerations, pistol types, defensive ammunition, spare magazines/reloading, lights and lasers, holster types, draw techniques, backup pistols, open carry, wardrobe choices, and the benefits of the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA). Some chapters get into some of the finer details of these topics, but really this should be viewed as an excellent primer for anyone who is new to concealed carry, or a wonderful summary of major concepts for more experienced practitioners of concealed carry.Especially nice to see is the second chapter, "Why We Carry", which is one of the best, concise, non-statistics-heavy, non-jargon-intensive defenses of the merits of firearms I've come across. I appreciate that Ayoob recognizes the need to train concealed carry practitioners in clear, concise, effective rebuttals to the many anti-gun myths and misperceptions that circulate in our society. It is very difficult to explain to non-carry-permit-holders why they have virtually nothing to fear--and a lot to gain--by being in the company of an armed, law-abiding citizen. Guns make many people nervous, but Ayoob recounts several simple, practical arguments that remind people why they are a useful and valuable tool that should not be regarded with hysteria, and that ought to be viewed akin to other safety equipment that you hope you never need, but are invaluable in an emergency--much like fire extinguishers. Also included are a number of excellent anecdotes about previous cases Ayoob has worked, and wonderful tips about the logistics of concealed carry (like how to hug someone or reach up to a high shelf without revealing your pistol). Since I'm already reasonably experienced with much of this, I found the chapter on preparation for the legalities of defensive shooting to be the most interesting and valuable (Chapter 4). Ayoob gives excellent advice about how to prepare before and react after a defensive shooting to ensure a strong and credible legal defense in the event you have to fire your pistol to defend yourself. In offering that advice, he debunks a lot of bad advice that circulates in online forums, such as the oft-repeated admonition that you "shouldn't say a word to the cops until after you talk to a lawyer." As Ayoob points out, it's much wiser to say as little as possible, but enough to ensure that evidence is promptly collected at the scene so your story can be corroborated later in the likely event your assailant(s) lie about what happened. He also explains that this requires good mental preparation before you ever find yourself in such a defensive incident, since at that time, your head will be less than clear due to the stress of the situation.Good advice, with ample photos and anecdotes to illustrate major points, and from one of the most established authorities on carry and shooting related issues. Highly recommended, especially for newcomers who would like to get their bearings in the world of concealed carry, but avoid all the bad advice and B.S. that circulates online.
