You need these characters in your life.
This came to my attention via twitter and I must say I am very disappointed that I didn't hear about it sooner, I'm kicking myself for knowing I could have had this wonderful book in my hands months ago. And what a fantastically written and illustrated comic this is. I am loving the LGBT+ representation, it's not forced it just is, it's naturally part of life and society. The story itself was fun and interesting with a few unexpected twists thrown in. It largely revolves around relationships, friendships and romantic entanglements set in a world were magic is a part of life. I'd highly recommend this to all fans of well crafted characters and interesting stories and if you've never picked up a comic before this is a good place to start.

An Inclusive novel filled with magic, mystery, and human drama. One of my new favorites!
Where do I even begin with this graphic novel!? I have a huge graphic novel collection that I am always looking to expand so when I heard about Destiny NY on kickstarter I KNEW I needed it. The art style is detailed and gorgeous and the writing is absolutely fantastic. Legitimately both laughed and cried at various points through the story. At first I was reminded of the Harry Potter universe (total Harry Pot-head here so that was glorious) but you pretty quickly realize that Destiny New York is a story all its own. Yeah theres magic and its super cool but the human drama is what keeps me wanting more. It is so complex and in depth. The creators managed to pack so much into one volume I feel like I know all the characters so well and yet so much mystery still surrounds so many of them. All that awesomeness aside, Destiny New York is even more wonderful because of the inclusion of its amazing LGBTQA+ characters. I believe it is so important to have more literature and media of all kinds that represent the LGBTQA+ community and not just by showcasing that they are in fact part of the community. These are not token characters and the focus is not solely on their sexuality; it is on dealing with their destinies, and escaping bad guys, and parallel universes, and the war against good and evil, oh and working regular jobs and being in relationships and going to school.OH AND yes, in case you were wondering, it totally passes the Bechdel test.I love Destiny NY. SO VERY MUCH. Highly highly recommend to anyone who enjoys graphic novels. CAN WE GET A VOLUME 2?!

Refreshing LGBTQ representation
I picked up this book at FlameCon 2017 on a whim, during a whirlwind weekend of art- and graphic novel-buying. Destiny, NY was billed as a story about a Magical Girl and her life after her big magical adventure is (prematurely?) done.I went in expecting Sailor Moon-esque transformation sequences and flashy spells, but this book is not that. (Though I do appreciate sparkly magicks, don't get me wrong.) Instead, the sorcery takes a back seat in this character driven story about romances and friendships, finding one's place in the world, and growing up (which, nowadays, easily extends into one's twenties). My favorite aspect of this book is how it turns the Token LGBTQ Character trope on its head: the majority of the characters are queer! What's even better is that in this universe, being queer is totally noncontroversial and taken for granted. We have so many stories about overcoming anti-gay oppression and/or the tortures of coming out, and while those do need to be told, this story takes a different tack. Without preamble, it dives right into the characters' lives with all their dramas, none of which are a result of their being queer. It's escapist and refreshing and I can't wait for Volume 2!
