Q: I have searched for the bulb you recommend, and it's not clear. is it a 40w led, or a 40w equivalent? there's a huge difference!

40 watts total... actual watts, not equivalent. In other words, it can accommodate an 'old fashioned' 40 watt incandescent bulb. This is about capacity. Therefore, if you had a powerful LED that actually used 40 watts (unlikely) it would also be usable.

Q: I only see package dimensions listed. What are the dimensions of the lamp itself?

Base = 6 inches wide, 1 1/4 inches high, Lamp 4 3/4 inches wide x 5 inches long, lower leg, 10 1/2 inches, upper leg 11inches. Hope this helps.

I think the 40w limit is referring to an incandescent light and the limit is due to the heat an incandescent light produces. I would think just about any LED that fits the socket would be fine as they product little heat.
