home for the Civil WAR soldier.
THE WIDE VARIETY OF CONTRIBUTORS TO THIS VOLUME MAKES IT UNIQUE. YOU HAVE FAMOUS SOLDIERSWRITING TO THEIR WIVES AND CHILDREN. tHEN YOU HAVE WIVES OF THE SOLDIERS BEGGING THEM TO COME HOME. tHE SOLDIERS OF BOTH SIDES ARE TAKING TIME TO RESPOND TO THEIR WIVES, FIANCES, MOTHERS AND FATHERS AND CHILDREN. THE POLITICIANS ALSO APPEAR HERE. I TELL YOU AS A HUSBANDAND fATHER OF SIX WHO SPENT MORE THAN TEN YEARS AT wAR, IT TEARS AT YOUR HEART AND ITNEVER GOS AWAY for the soldier or family! There is a letter in this book to a wife just prior to his death in the battle ofANTIETAM. ONE WONDERS WHAT WENT THROUGH HER MIIND WHEN SHE WAS NOTIFIED OF HER HUSBANDS DEATH. I WOULD LIKE TO RELATE A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE FOR THE READER. A MEMBER OF MY FAMILYwas a professional Air Force Pilot and had three children. He was shot down over Hanoi on his 35th birthdayin 1968. HIS WIDOW MARRIED ANOTHER MILITARY PILOT BEFORE HE WAS RETURNED HOME FOR BURIAL.his two daughters and son were tormented by this situation as the new Father had five children. THEY WERE ALLDAMAGED FOR LIFE AND THE WIFE HAD NO CLUE. THIS IS A REAL LIFE SITUATION. I HIGHLY RECOMMENDTHIS BOOK TO ALL WHO ARE INTERESTED. tHE BOOK WAS OBTAINED AT A VERY CHEAP PRICE FROMamazon.com.

Good read
It's interesting and even some are actually sad, those that have an annotation of what happened to them. If all the letters or most of them had a little notation of what happened to these people it would be a 5 star easy, but a lot of the letters just leave you sitting there wondering did they die or they live. Also some don't exactly seem like letters but are more like diary passages. Over all it's been a great read to pass the time and helps the reader understand a little bit more of what it was like.

Concise Collection with Great Illustrations
I enjoyed this concise and diverse collection of Civil War letters and the illustrations that accompany it. I think that its brevity and the balance of letters from enlisted men, generals, President Lincoln, and family members at home make it ideal for the general reader. Short editor's notes add relevant context and sometimes reveal the fate of the letter writer. No one here has commented on the excellent illustrations of life in the camps and on the battlefronts. There are about 50 detailed etchings of the soldiering life that I thought really enhanced the letters. They are from Civil War Etchings (Dover Pictorial Archives) by Edwin Forbes, which was first published in 1890. I think this is a good collection at a reasonable price.

Good sampling of letters, very few from home
The book presents a wide variety of letters from both sides of the conflict, including political figures as well as soldiers. The lack in the book, however, is including letters FROM home to soldiers. Understandably, far fewer of these letters survived at all. But the subtitle of the book "From Home, Camp and Battlefield" implied more than the one or two letters the book includes.

Civil War Letters
Another piece of the puzzle if you're interested in the true picture of the American Civil War. A good publication to pick up and put down - no loss of continuity. Very touching in spots! Thanks to Amazon for carrying unknown publications.

Great coffee table book, and also for the civil war history buff!
I bought this for my tenth grader who is interested in History. I didn't read it front to back, but the few pages I delved in were very interesting and lovely illustrated.
