Know what you're buying. Not a hone.
Quality product, but know what you are buying. This has a very coarse grit and is great for resurrecting severely neglected knives, a job that would take FOREVER to do with a honing steel. But in my opinion, this is a companion to a good steel, not a replacement for it. I start with this product to get the dings out of the blade, then finish up with a steel to get a razor-sharp edge.

Love it
This sharpening steel is great. I use it almost daily to hone the edges of my knives when I cook. The one thing you do have to be careful of is this is a DIAMOND steel, as a result if your hit the blade wrongly on the steel you can actually re-cut the knives edge on this steel effectively dulling the blade. It's not a negative, as the steel does exactly what its supposed to its just simply something to note, and to make sure you use the steel correctly as to not damage your knives.

A keeper and a gift
This steel has been a great purchase, both for my home and for a family member as well. This was gifted to a chef in the family and she has been very pleased with it's performance. We especially like the oval shape of the steel, as opposed to the more common cylindrical steels. I am skeptical of how much the steel actually sharpens the blade, but it does keep the knives we have in great shape, greatly increasing their performance between sharpenings. While the steel does degrade over time (the diamond coating wears down), it has been working well for the better part of this year for us, so we are pleased with it, and will repurchase when it finally is worn out. We use it on our Shun knives as well as some Henkles.

Best I have ever used!
I have used machines, grinding stones, and several other sharpening gadgets. This is the easiest to use sharpening tool; it just takes a few passes on each side to leave the knife in an almost new condition. I have no hesitation in using often. Note that this is a sharpener (ie, it wears the knife), it is not an edge straightener.

Wusthof 4483 Steel
I bought this sharpening steel mainly based on recommendation. A few of the chefs I work with told me this the sharpening steel that they swear by. And know I can see why this steel is great it really sharpens your knifes. I know what a few of you might be saying a bit pricey but 110% worth it. Extended your knifes live and make it safer for yourself. Because in reality a dull knife is a dangerous knife. And if you don't know how to sharpen a knife don't sweat it there's instructions on the back of the package. A must buy for anyone who likes to cook.

A happy replacement for an old friend
Does the job. I have had a similar one for almost 25 years and finally had to replace it due to it becoming worn out. I hope I get as long of life from this one. Do be careful with 'stainless steel' knife blades, as they do require more honing to get a really sharp edge and then do not hold it as well as high carbon steel blades.

False description
The seller (cutlerymania) sold the item as wustof 10" wide diamond steel. With the image of the steel showing 4483 stamped into it . But I received the wustof 9 inch narrow diamond steel. It does not have the 4483 stamped in

Having previously used V-sharpeners for my knives I was persuaded to buy a proper steel. Apparantly the V-sharpeners only sharpen a certain amount and getting any sharper than that isn't possible without a steel. I now use the steel every time I take a knife from the rack to use and every time I put one back on the rack after washing and my knives have never been sharper. It only needs a few strokes on each side but the continuous, incremental, sharpening pays dividends and using my knives is an absolute joy. The most dangerous thing in a kitchen (other than pans of boiling oil) are blunt knives as they are prone to slip and need excessive pressure to cut. With sharp knives, so long as you use proper cutting and holding techniques, your knives become safer and the quality of your food will increase (sharper knives mean less bruising when cutting vegetables/fruit and less tearing when cutting meat/fish). The oval shape of the steel gives a larger contact area with the blade and so makes sharpening quickly easier and safer - less pressue and fewer strokes means less chance of slipping and hurting yourself.

I couldn't tell for sure by the image but this steel is indeed elliptical. I've never used a steel that wasn't round. The steel that came with my Henckels knife set felt smooth to the touch since I purchased it. I could get an edge on the larger knives but it had no effect on my paring knives. I mostly use my Made-In knives now and was quick to put this steel to use on them. It is much grainier than my last steel and that's a good thing. The elliptical design actually makes sharpening easier. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to use it but it worked very well. I'm happy. I'm no chef and I can get a good edge.
