Seaward 344A910 PrimeTest ,grey/red ,100 PAT Tester

I work with high voltage vintage guitar amplifiers that often need more than a pass/fail indication and are always going to be repaired, never discarded. This tester lets me see the actual resistance of the earth and insulation so I can make a judgement call about how best to proceed. Quite often vintage equipment may give a borderline earth fail simply because the fixed power lead is too thin or has become partially corroded so when I see a 'fail' reading of a few ohms I know the amp is likely in good order and just needs a new mains wire. Being a battery powered device the leakage test is performed as a 'substitute leakage test' where 40v AC is used (and the result multiplied by 6 internally), so unlike a 'true' 240v test, this device is also ideal for 115vAC American amplifiers, which whilst not subject to PAT testing in their origin country should still meet UK standards when used in this country with a step-down transformer. Of course you'll have to obtain an appropriate adapter because one isn't included, but those are commonly available as 'travel' adapters. The device has a big clear screen, is very well-made with moulded rubber edges, comes with a spacious expanding case with shoulder strap, low resistance lead for extension testing, lead with a 4mm insulated plug to a huge alligator clip, and uses 6AA batteries (which were also included). For a truly portable device like this I much prefer batteries to rechargeable solutions because many sites where this could be used may not have (or allow) access to mains for re-charging, and if you run down an internal rechargeable (or it stops holding charge due to age) you're completely stuck on a job. This unit doesn't have RCD testing or datalogging, and doesn't support three-phase, but for the target usage of 'small appliances' in relatively small quantities, which I imagine anyone looking at this unit is considering, it covers everything you need with a quality that implies you'll be using it for years to come. It also has a nifty little app you can download for your smartphone if you want an easy way to digitally log results. However, if you are more concerned with installing power facilities or logging hundreds, or thousands of appliances in a professional capacity then I'd consider spending a little more.

Useful for peace of mind and to satisfy venue requirements for tested equipment only. Instruction notes are good. One very minor criticism - if the supplied lead were a little longer it would facilitate the testing of plug-in mains multi-way adaptors, instead of having to test and use a longer lead for connection.

The best tester out there. Really happy with this machine and I use it every day. Better than the PAT100 Megger that constanty freaked out and ate batteries like a dead short (almost) and I eventually threw my PAT100 by Megha in the bin.

Does what it says it will

Great for all the PAT testing needs. It is a manual tester in that it displays the results on the LCD screen and you have to write the results in the book but it does also display the values unlike the cheaper versions, rather than just a Pass/Fail so you can determine if it is a true pass/fail when the leads are long.

I bought this PAT tester to as my first introduction to PAT testing. Seaward does great videos explaining how to use the tester, and the machine itself guides you as you use it. Very happy with it.
