For action martial arts fans
This box set is for martial arts and action fans only.Don't expect superb oscar winning acting because these movies don't fit into that kind of genre. The 1st best of the best is completely different from the others. The 1st one focuses on an american team competing against a Korean team in a full contact karate bout. The other movies have their own story lines but are more action typed than the first was. Best of the Best 2 I thought was ok. It's the 3rd and 4th ones which are worth seeing. The price amazon are selling is incredible that is why I give it 5 stars. I prefer this type of martial arts / action because the fight scenes are believeable no stupid wire work or computer animated stunts are featured.I like this boxset but it is not something every one will enjoy.

Good Value
I give this 4 stars as at £2 per film, you can't really go wrong.Film 1: clichéd and taking itself seriously, I think this is an absolute classic. don't expect great acting, or great plot, but with Rhee, Robert, Penn and Earl Jones, you've got a fairly good cast, and a typical tale of east versus west with some humour thrown in for good measure. James Earl Jones gives this film good credibility, and some gravitas.Film 2: action rather than sport, however the same main chars barring JEJ, so you feel some continuity, again, very very clichéd, more so than the first one, and is just good all round kick ass entertainment.Film 3: only Philip Rhee is left, so the continuity is pretty much gone, and it could be a stand alone movie, not part of a series. the cover description and amazon description are wrong, as that describes the 2nd film again, amazingly the cover jacket went to print like that! This is about neo-nazis in southern US, and it's an okayish straight to video type film. The finale of these types of films always has good guy / bad guy fight, which goes to the wire, and it's slightly tenuous that the worlds best martial artist was taken to the limit by a redneck bully... oh, and turns out Lee is a southern country boy (in film 1 he's from california, and in film 2 was raised by american indians...)Film 4: any link to the past is gone, as suddenly he lives in the city, and has a 6 year old daughter... this is just a straight action movie.I would only buy this for the first 2, however, as I said, at £2 per film the overall value is high.

Don't expect a saga
If you like a mixture of martial arts, bloody shootouts, and broken bones, as Seagal & Van Damme delivered in the 90's then this may be worth a look. The first 2 films do follow on from each other with 5/6 of the original cast reprising their roles in Best of the Best 2. However this trend does not continue in the 2 latter films. It is fairly obvious that these films only had the same title in a cheap ploy to cash in on the mediocre success the first two films achieved. The main character throughout the films is played by the fairly unknown Phillip Rhee, whose martial arts skills put Van Damme to shame, however his acting skills are really quite poor (still sounds like Van Damme), especially in the 1st film.BEST OF THE BEST 1Easily has the best cast of the four films with Rhee being joined by Eric Roberts (Julia's ugly brother), the late Chris Penn (Resevoir Dogs/True Romance) and James Earl Jones (Darth Vadar's voice & the Jack Ryan films). Quite a low key film about a Martial Arts tournament between The U.S. and Korea - Poor acting - and with the exception of Rhee, poor martial arts skills. Penn steals the show as the arrogant team member.BEST OF THE BEST 2Penn & Roberts return alongside Rhee as they battle against Las Vegas club owners Ralph Moeller (Universal Soldier/Gladiator) and Wayne Newton (Mr Las Vegas). This has a lot more action and violence, and dare I say it, the acting and the martial arts skills have improved. This time it is Sonny Landham (Predator) who steals the show as Rhee's drunken half brother who eventually trains Roberts & Rhee to defeat the colossus Moeller.BEST OF THE BEST 3I attempted to watch this film 3 times and fell asleep each time. Roberts & co leave the franchise, leaving Rhee to battle it out on his own. Gina Gershon (face off) co stars, but this film is drab. The last 15 minutes do get better with some quite violent action, but don't worry if you don't get round to watching this one.BEST OF THE BEST 4Suprisingly, this film was really enjoyable. Excellent action and violence, even though the explosions look a bit cheap. Rhee is joined by Ernie Hudson( the 4th Ghostbuster) and Tobin Bell (Jigsaw out of the Saw films). This film was the most exciting out of the lot and the good news is, because the saga does not follow on, you could watch this one first. This boxset is so cheap that this film alone is worth the price. In summary, not classics, but if you are finding yourself still buying Van Damme or Seagal films then do yourself a favour and buy this boxset instead as all 4 films on offer are better than the trash that the other two have been producing in recent years.

Great Set
Having seen Best of the best originally in 1989(1st Film)I was very impressed that all the films have been made available in DVD format, my old vhs tapes are a bit worn. Unfortunatly the descriptions on the cover are misleading (3 + 4)and are not helpful. However, that said, it is great to see messrs Eric Roberts and Chris Penn in one of their unknown movies. Phillip Rhee is one of the best martial artists you will ever see, equal to Jet Li and others. Worth the price for a great collection of martial arts movies.

Nice upgrade to their DVD counterparts...
This is a quick review for the UK release of the Best of the Best: The Complete Collection Blu Ray set from 4 Digital Media. This set includes all four of the Best of the Best films on two Blu Ray discs. This is a barebones release that only includes the films. Unfortunately there are no extra bonus features.I just received my order for this set and it only took 4 days to arrive in the US from the UK. I have only viewed the first two films in the series but overall they look pretty good. The first film isn’t quite the same quality as the second one but it’s improved over the previous DVD releases. While I haven’t viewed the last two films yet I am confident they will be of the same overall quality as the second film since they are obviously later releases. As long as they are comparable I will be happy. As of right now these films have not been released on Blu Ray in the US and who knows if that will ever happen. So until that time comes this set is currently the best option for upgrading your Best of the Best DVDs to Blu Ray.While the region code on the package and in the description claims that these are Region B discs they played perfectly fine on my inexpensive US Philips Blu Ray player. I had previously read online that they are actually Region Free discs before I purchased the set, so figured it was worth a try.Overall I am happy with the set and I am glad to have a legit Blu Ray release of these films in my collection.

Article NULLE
