Whether you're a newcomer to the Fantastic Four or a lapsed longtime reader, this is the perfect jumping-on point for where the comic books are now. You really don't need to know any backstory from previous volumes to pick this up: we join the estranged and separated members of the team going their own way after a recent tragic event and over the course of the first four issues collected here, they reunite and we discover what happened to split them up. The gang then take an eventful road trip together and end up saving the planet. The team's initial separation enables readers to become acquainted (or reacquainted) with each of our heroes in a trio of solo stories before they eventually get back together.Writer Ryan North demonstrates an acute understanding of Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben, and how they work best as both a team and a family. He also brings some proper science to the table to tell fun, mind-bending and thought-provoking science-fiction stories – as opposed to the dopey yawn-inducing magic-fantasy-slash-soap-opera that has come to dominate science-fiction media in recent years. North's collaborators Iban Coello and Ivan Fiorelli provide delightful colourful and characterful artwork, and each chapter is prefaced with superb cover paintings by the always-brilliant Alex Ross.Without any shadow of a doubt, North's tenure on Fantastic Four has proven to be the most enjoyable run of issues since those of Waid & Wieringo (early 2000s), Claremont & Larroca (late 1990s) and Byrne (1980s).
