Awesome NAS
It will be a bit of a money pit when you factor in the drives (you'll need 3-4 to get good throughput), the SSD cache (for best performance), and a 10gb NIC (required for direct video editing), but this is an awesome bit of kit! Highly recommended.

Coming from a QNAP of comparable cost/size.. these offer much better build quality and OS features
The Good:If you are coming from another brand such as QNAP, then the first thing you'll appreciate from the DS1621+ is the quality of the components and quality of the software. These run a lot quieter, that similar priced QNAPs. When I brought my QNAP TS-873 and TVS-1282, Everything was a source of noise. I had to spend £50+ on replacement Noctua Fans, £10 on anti-squeek tape for the drive-caddies, £15 for rubber anti-vibration pads to stand them on..With the DS1621+ being around the same price as the TS-873, I was expecting a similar experience and was preparing to order new fans etc for it - But after installing 5x14TB WD Enterprise drives and switching it on, I was blown away, it was silent. The fans briefly spin-up at power-on, but after 3-4 seconds they go silent and stay that way! Likewise, the drive caddies on these do a superb job at absorbing the HDD vibrations, I had to place my hand on the caddies to make sure the drives were spinning. With regards to software features, this is generally where Synology excels, it feels much more polished.. Where QNAP always felt like features were hacked and stuck together with "sticky tape".The Bad:There are 3 main issues I've found with the Synology:1) The SSD/NVMe Caching on Synology's is extremely basic, and can only be assigned to 1 volume. On QNAP you can assign an SSD Cache to multiple volumes, generally it is far superior and more flexible.2) The Networking features on Synology are basic, only allowing limited configuration of the eth ports.. On QNAP, you have full VLAN support (i.e. multiple VLANs per interface port) and can even create Virtual Switches. Synology does come with Open vSwitch but its only available from the CLI, and changes do not persist across reboots, so you need to script it.3) Synology look like they are trying to force customers into buying "Synology" branded components and upgrades such as RAM, and even HDD's.. With the UI showing "Warnings" when it find a device that is from a 3rd party, again such as a non-Synology branded RAM.Synology will tell you "this is for your own good, so we can give you better support". But lets face it, its not... 3rd party products work just as-well, and the fact Synology-branded costs 2-3x more than other mainstream RAM vendors, this is nothing more than scare-tactics and money-grabbing.If you do buy a 3rd party upgrade, i.e. RAM, ensure you keep hold of the original one that came with the NAS. If you need to contact Synology, you might need to temporarily re-install it until they fix your problem, then you can swap it back. Conclusion:An awesome box of tricks, that I've been so impressed with, I've ordered the bigger brother (DS1821+) to replace my QNAP TVS-1282..

Great bit of kit - but caddy's very meh!
Brilliant bit of kit with great app selection for a great range of network services. However, the caddy's are very flimsy and three of the six handles of mine would not stick to their latches unless i would hit them really hard to the point it felt like i would damage them.
