The book is a much-loved classic, and I found it almost as enjoyable as when I was young. Anne’s kindness, seemingly boundless energy, and quick wit light up the lives of even the most withdrawn and hostile inhabitants of Prince Edward Island’s fictitious village, Avonlea. Anne takes on the job of schoolmarm, and by the time two years have passed, she has enriched the lives of all the children in her one-room class. Anne is a very original character who avoids the cloying charm of the age even though she’s in step with the mores of her time.The book loses a star because the introduction by Shopsterise, Ltd., is totally inadequate to preface a literary work. Although the few pages cover the landscape and turn of the-century rural society of Prince Edward Island, they offer not a single word about the author or her literary milieu. What an oversight.

This is a great follow-on story within a wonderful series. Well written, good story, well-developed characters.

Despite Anne of Green Gables being one of my all-time favorite books to read when I was growing up, I never read the other books in the series. It was so great to return to the world of Avonlea and the amazing characters of L.M. Montgomery. Adding it to my comfort read list.

This book is in the public domain. Most who are looking to purchase this book already know its wonderful original story. For a publisher to republish a public domain book on Amazon, they must include some original content. Most publishers, including this one, include a brief foreword. This foreword is exceptionally brief, just a handful of paragraphs with a few sentences each. It is remarkably similar, and I believe in parts the same, as the publisher’s forewords in other books in this series they have published. It touches very quickly on Prince Edward Island's history, culture, education, and technology before a couple-of-sentence book summary. As this original content and the cover are the only things that distinguish versions of a public domain story, they are the only concepts meriting discussion in a review like this. I do like the cover, as I think it reflects the spirit of the book, but I think the foreword’s original content is scanty, not quite worth purchasing this version over other ones. Frankly, you could read more in-depth about the topics by taking advantage of a few blog posts discussing Victorian/Edwardian Prince Edward Island or the Anne of Green Gables series.Original Story: 5 starsThis Version: 3 starsI received a free digital copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
