Wonderful satire on small town snobbery
We must all know about small town snobbery and this post war gem tells it like it is. Wonderful picture of ration book rules and enforcement, puts icing -or rather illegal pork- on the cake!

Hard to find this film.
I had been looking for a copy of this for ages. For some reason it is never shown on TV, and DVDs are few and far between. If you haven't seen it, the story is a light-hearted tale of the trials and tribulations of living in a class-ridden, food-rationed post war Britain. The cast includes many well-known British character actors. This DVD is Dutch, with Dutch subtitles. The soundtrack is in English. You have to turn the subtitles off using your DVD player settings, there is no menu option to do this on the DVD itself.

Excellent film dreadful sound quality
Saw this film when it first came out, great actors and storyline. The sound quality however greatly detracts from enjoying the film. Muffled and echos continually. Not fit for purpose.

Private Function dvd
One of a series of films from Handmade Films and starring Michael Palin and the pantheon of British movie actors just having fun. This is a classic tale of understated English bumbling idiots full of well meaning and just getting by as the English did. The story is totally redolent of class divisions that those 'of a certain age' cannot help but identify with. Watch this, it is brilliant but remember 'no pig here'.

Sois gai ris donc
Si tous les Monty Python ne sont pas là , on retrouve ici l'esprit foutraque qui les caractérise. Humour quand tu nous tiens!

She's seventy four!
This is a highly entertaining comedy pertaining to the formal town festivities surrounding the wedding of Princess Elizabeth to Prince Philip. The comedy arises for the shortages of celebratory food during that time of severe rationing and concerns an illegally kept pig. Officialdom has to be kept at bay at all costs! Michael Palin and Maggie Smith excel as a married couple, he a podiatrist and innocent of the pig affair. The Mother-in-law (Liz Smith) is 74 years old, doddery and amusing; --and younger than I am now, hence the title of the review.

Palin deals with pig's feet - and a class conscious community.
This is such a good and well crafted film, it is difficult to accept that it is also a very factual history lesson. The setting is a small North of England town in 1947. Although WW2 has been over for 2 years, Socialism has greedily kept its iron, war-time hand, on the country as a whole. Shortages are severe and restrictions are strict. Food rationing is still very much in force and government inspectors are plentiful. The upcoming wedding of Princess Elizabeth to Prince Philip prompts the local 'big-wigs' to engage in actions that are far from legal, in an attempt to hold a civic feast to mark the occasion. A newcomer to the community (Palin), while carrying out his chiropodist's function with much success, doesn't 'fit in' with the local dignitaries - in particular, with the Local Doctor (Denholm Elliott). After a series of odd - and often hilarious - escapades, Palin and his Class obsessed wife (Maggie Smith) find themselves invited to the civic feast after all. This film is a true gem of English film humour and genuine acting talent. As a social history of England and its class-conscious society, prior to (say) 1970, it is of the greatest interest and veracity. The acting, throughout, is first rate and Richard Griffiths, Pete, Postlethwaite and Bill Paterson give exemplary performances as they lead a very talented cast of extras.

Maggie Smith Shines Again!
This is a classic Maggie Smith flick...such wonderfully British humor. As it is an older movie the speed of the story is much more relaxed than today's frenetic pace of flicks. This cast is chocked full of marvelously familiar faces. This certainly is a must have for any Maggie Smith fan...
