I built them with 2" × 6" × 3' non-treated lumber, which I lightly sanded after notching the back to fit against the wall, since the brackets create a small gap. I then applied a pre-stain, stained twice in golden oak, and finished with two coats of oil-based polyurethane diluted 50% with mineral spirits. The leftmost and rightmost brackets are secured into studs, while the middle bracket is mounted into sheetrock using the included anchors (I tend to overdo things, so you can skip the middle bracket if you prefer).
