Duck in the Truck

To all those 1 star reviewers
I am writing this review because so many people are missing the best part of the book. Yes, Duck is not polite and not a very good friend. I believe that is on purpose. The world isn't always a nice place but keeping a child from this fact is actually NOT preparing them to succeed in the world. Think about the book this way. Instead of your child having to experience a mean kid at school you are able to begin to prepare your child to note bad behavior and to allow your child to feel he knows a better way to behave. He can see that choosing Duck as a friend would not be a good choice. He would see that polite words feel better to people's ears. She can feel how a kindness done without a thank you feels empty. You are the one to give these valuable lessons to your child. Use this great book to teach your child to speak nicely and be a good friend. They will get the message from your first reading of this book. Your job IS to interpret books for your very young child. My Pre-school students and my grand children love this book. One of the best things we can do for our children is to present a simple situation, such as Duck's angry reply to Sheep and Duck leaving his friends stuck in the muck, where the child can point out mean behavior. As an adult/parent we can talk with the child about feelings and a better way to act. My grandson stops at both those places in the book each time I read it to him and points out the behavior flaws of Duck. Bravo to Jez Alborough for the opportunity to talk about being nice without having the child in tears because it happened to them. A remote experience is easier for a child to deal with. This is a wonderful book.

Please ignore "Bad Manners" below
I am a volunteer reader for the Denver Public Library and I recently read this book to a group of preschool children. It's a fun book! The rhyming and repetition patterns of the text are characteristic of some of the finest books for young people. As far as the content of the story, yes, Duck is a character of suspect temperament, but I thought the author made that clear (Duck is an antihero). You are not expected to cheer for him. Besides as the reader, you should point out Duck's flaws to your listeners (it's your "moral" obligation). Ask your son/daughter how he/she would feel if someone treated him/her the way Duck treats his "friends". I spent time with my listeners and asked them about whether Duck was being nice to the other characters in the story and emphasized the importance of treating people well....check out the book for yourself at a library.

Beautifully illustrated with an adventurous, catchy story!
Large type is appreciated as children begin reading. The rhyme is natural, not forced. I think my 3-year old granddaughter will love it. It is similar to another book she has loved - My Truck Is Stuck. The Duck In the Truck seems simpler, in a good way.

My boys love the duck series
My boys absolutely love the duck series. We own a few other stories as well. This story is easy to follow and the words rhyme and are perfect for a 2yr and 4yr old. I love the large print and they love the pictures and the detailed expressions on the character's faces. They truly love the series and ask to read the "duck" book almost nightly. Will definitly be purchasing more "duck" books in the future

This was a great rhyming book and arrived on time. However, with many books ordered from Amazon, this book arrived bent.

I couldnt find his well used copy so I bought this for my 2 year old. It's as good as I remembered. Good illustrations good story with some repetitive phrases humor and an ending we didn't expect.
