A bible commentary you were wondering existed amidst a monopoly of Christian dogmatic tradition
What can I say? This bible presents the text in a fresh and engaging translation which appears (I am not one to say definitively) faithful to the original texts. However, what separates this one apart is the attached commentary and parallel story-telling, which presents the stories as though they were just that--stories. Stories communicate truth; the truth is what matters, not the historical veracity of a certain series of events. Torah tradition allows for and even encourages debate about the meaning of the scriptures—stories evolve with the understanding of the people telling and reading them.

A review of the CEB (Common English Bible)
The CEB Storytellers Bible is just that-a Bible that tells stories of faith, of endurance, of love and of change during Biblical times that can be applied to today's troubled times. This version of the Bible is an excellent edition to your library of Bibles, or if you have not had a Bible, or just want a new edition this is great. I normally enjoy a King James Version (KJV) of the Bible, so this was a different treat with gender neutral language and a more modern language style. Whatever version of the Bible you choose as a Christian (if you are one, or if you are just exploring a different faith for variety) I enjoyed this one. This Bible has all the standard contents of the Bible (New and Old Testament) and is written in a more conversational, fictional novel type type which makes the verses of the Bible more readable in my opinion. (Please note the Psalms, the Chapter of Job, and Isaiah look as they do in other Bibles). The language is very modern, and can be enjoyed by scholars of the Bible or by people who are not familiar with the message of this book at all. There are Midrashim sidebars, a preface to the CEB, a narrative introduction to Genesis, Charts, Maps, and a story and Map index. What I liked best was the historical sections of this Bible, in dark blue in some chapters, that describe the time or the history of the particular passage being discussed. These were the 'Midrashim' sidebars. This version of the Bible runs 1761 pages, not including the Map section at the end. This is an excellent hardcover book, although the pages are flimsy in every Bible I've ever had the type and the page are similar so there is nothing new here. The only possible dislike to me is the cover of this book-exactly what are those ugly people doing? Are these people supposed to be 'fishers of men'-if so, why don't they look a bit happier to be following Jesus and to be blessed to have eternal life? The Ugly Christian Fishing Twins (UCFT for short) are weird, are horrid illustrations for such an expensive book, might make someone not by it because they make the book look cheap, and distract from the important message of this Bible. Why couldn't these people at least smile, aren't they doing the Lord's work? The cover is nothing I would get a tattoo over.I must emphasis that I am not a Bible scholar, and have never read any Bible from cover to cover. Rather I am a Christian enthusiast, while not following all of the scripture to it's entirety I am a fan of following the word and having faith. Otherwise, despite the awful cover I highly recommend this book, and feel it would be ideal to be used for older Christians to try a different Bible for a while, or for new Christians who like modern language for their scripture. Overall I enjoyed this interpretation which is why I gave this book five stars.

Very Easy to Understand and Enjoyable to Read
I hadn’t read the CEB translation of the Bible before receiving this one, but I absolutely love it. I also love the added stories that help one understand the context of the different parts of the Bible. This version is very easy to read (if you read it in segments) and is very easy to understand. While it is a bit different from other translations I feel most of the message remains the same. The book is formatted in a single column rather than double, which I appreciate as it’s easier to read. The quality of the book is very good. Definitely one of the better Bibles I own. Highly recommend.

Storytellers Companion meets CEB
The CEB is a translation developed by a team of mainline scholars for mainline publishers. Made both for oral readability and for a little simpler reading level than the NRSV, I have found the translation refreshing at times. In this study Bible, notes are taken from the "Storytellers Companion to the Bible" commentary and inserted into the text. The "midrash" sections are converted to sidebars. The best of the commentary selections are inserted into the text, offset by italics and different color text.I liked the commentary series. I have enjoyed the CEB translation. I look forward to reading the two together.

Modern take on the bible
This is a large book, so I'm still working my way through it. I will say that the translations make it so much easier to read. The added text provides new insights , and has increased my understanding of many of the stories. I would highly recommend it if you want an easier to understand version of the bible.

This Bible is a great teaching tool for all ages.
I like the included Midrash which often contains nuggets for discussion. It is not a pocket Bible so you pretty much will want to extract what you need for a particular topic and either copy it or retype the ideas onto another medium. This Bible would not work well as an ebook since much of the material is in parallel column format.
