Alfred's Teach Yourself to Play Dobro: Everything You Need to Know to Start Playing Now!, Book & Online Audio (Teach Yourself Series)

I have avoided Alfred for years.
I have always viewed Alfred books as low-level children's books. Unfit for an adult learner! As it could be demonstrated that the majority of them are just that! But then this one came along! Well thought out and not at all childish! Good Job Alfred!

I can play dobro, you can too
Exceeded my expectations! Easy to read, understand and play along. Everything is explained very well and within my first day, 30 mins, was able to play the 3 String Waltz. Very pleased. If I can do this, anyone absolutely can with patience, time, and reps.

great starter book
I play the guitar and mandolin and wanted to try the dobro. All the music has dobro tabs and standard notation which is a great way to learn music and it will allow me to use the music I have to apply it to the dobro. The book also shows which fingers should be picking the notes to help you get good timing and speed. The cd is very useful for practice and see how the music and exercises should sound. One of the best starter books for learing the basics of music that I have seen. Great Job.

Alfred's Teach YOurself to Play Dobro
I like the fact that this book was easy to read and understand, starting with the basics. There is a lot of good instruction and I haven't played very much yet, so this was a good book to start with. I am enjoying using it, and feel more confident with my playing.

not much use for a round neck.
Geared toward a lap guitar with little help for a Round Neck Dobro Resonator slide. Tough to find lesson material for open g tuning on a resonator. Using the slide is considerably different from the bottom (1st string) as opposed to the top (6th string). Still looking......

Overall - pretty good
In a town my size, it would be unusual that someone would be teaching this instrument. The book starts out assuming the student knows very little about music - and starts you off with very simple exercises and progresses a an acceptable speed. Why only 4 stars? It assumes you know some things that I didn't, like how to hold the steel, how to dampen the strings behind it, how to tilt it or lay it down, even the best way to hold the instrument. I've played stringed instruments for many years, but this one is new to me. Self-teaching can be a great start - but it can also set up some bad habits that will take much longer to unlearn than to learn. Now - to be fair - I only got a small way into the book before abandoning it for online lessons. If you are looking to play a passable Dobro - then this and similar books will be fine.
