It grinds wooden sticks to a fine point. If the colored pencils you speak of are wooden, it will in fact grind them to a fine point.

Why is this sharpener 100 dollars more than the rest?

This is the absolute boss hog pencil sharpener. You do not need this sharpener if you only have a few pencils to sharpen every month. You need this sharpener if you have an office where employees need pencils sharpened on a regular basis, or if you are a teacher or consultant that works with pencils (which I am),

Can it be used to sharpen golf pencils?

No. The hole sizes are fine, but the helical blades are too deep inside the machine. You can't sharpen anything shorter than about 2.5 inches in this unit. Sharpening golf pencils for church is the reason we bought this unit, so we're returning it (sadly, because it's otherwise a brilliant machine).
