Hi Amalia, Good question. The RO system itself before the alkaline and UV filter removes all the minerals from the water. With the alkaline filter, the water filters through the condensed mineral ions in the alkaline filter which allow the water to absorb the good minerals back into the water. How much waste water does it produce. Is waste water produced when the tank is full?

Hi, I don't have exact amounts of waste water produced, but it is quite a lot, I think it dumps about 2/3 to 1/3 usable, so not that good, however, no water is wasted when the tank is full. Everything goes quiet as soon as the tank is full. Water quality improves after the first few days, however, after a few weeks, if you drink water from another source, you realize how good your RO water tastes. We are about 3 month in now, so have ordered a 3 year supply of filters ready. On the one hand it is easy to say water is just water, but it is greatly improved after being filtered via this system. Just one thing to check, if you have the UV canister make sure the magnetic type flow switch turns the UV off when no water is flowing to the tap, I had to rotate my switch a little as it seemed to be affected by the UV somehow. There must be some magnetic influence that keeps it on.   Hope that helps. Jonathan.

Can I easily fit 3-way taps to this system to bypass the alkaline filter?

I really don't know. It was extremely straightforward to install following the installation video on youtube and the system works a dream. The water supplied is really very good and I think it's all due to the alkaline filter, I can't see any reason to bypass it.
